Cougars 2011-12 Football Discussion

I think it is funny how BYU fans conveniently forget that Riley played the 4th quarter against Utah, and lost 14-0, including a turnover (Riley fumble) for a touchdown.

By the 6 minute mark in the third quarter the shark had jumped the tank. Not even the ghosts of Young or McMahon would have made a difference at that point.

Riley is so much better than Hypes it isn't even funny.

Some things that I'd like to see more out of the offense:

1. More no huddle/hurry up offense. They did some of that today. I'd like to see more.
2. More variation and imagination in formation. Try out some fun formations like 3 offensive linemen and the rest spread out. Use some pistol stuff.
3. More screens and play action. Screens to slow down the rush. Play action to create more big plays.
4. Lighter offensive linemen. BYU seems a bit behind on the times. Fat tubbies like T. Brown are too slow. Even D-tackles are lighter and more athletic in today's game. More athletic linemen will allow them to get outside and help block downfield for runners. More often than not, you'd see BYU runners out running their offensive linemen badly. Had the linemen not run slower than cold molasses going uphill, they would have ripped off a big play.
5. Michael Alisa. Just more of him. He's the next Harvey, give him the rock.

Think Aaron Rogers could have really done that much better with his team losing by... 40 points? or 50?

Come on now. Be a little honest here. The defense knew EXACTLY what the offense had to do at that point. And the offense and the 5 remaining fans in the stadium knew how much the game stunk.

I didn't watch the game and I'm also very aware that Riley probably made quite a bit of plays with his legs that Heaps couldn't make, but just by looking at the box score, is going 17-for-40 with 3 TD's and 2 INTS against a mediocre/good football team really something that Jake Heaps couldn't pull off? I think this Tulsa team was probably a little better than the UTEP team BYU faced last year in their bowl, but not by much. Jake Heaps seemed to do just fine against them.

Again, I'm just playing devil's advocate to a certain degree, but I wouldn't go as far as to say Riley is "so much better than Hypes it isn't even funny". In fact, I think in 2012 when BYU faces good teams you'll see Nelson continue to throw for sub 50% completion rate and something worse than a 2 to 1 TD-to-INT ratio. Can Riley make plays with his legs? Obviously. Is he more exciting to watch than Heaps? Certainly. Is he a better leader? You bet your ***, but let's not mistake that with actually being a good QB. Completing 50% of your passes or less on the college level is absolutely horrid. He may be fun to watch, and he may be gritty, but I think he costs you games next season.

Riley did not play very good in that game, until the very end. He really showed his weaknesses through 3 1/2 quarters.

I agree with all of this.

Tebow spent his college career winning multiple national titles and beating teams like Alabama, Auburn and LSU. Riley Nelson beats the likes of Utah State and Tulsa. By all means, comparing Riley to Tebow is "not that far from the truth actually".

God, some of you are idiots.
