Could we buy a 3rd 1st rounder, late in the round?

I remember the Suns, among other teams, sold their 1st round pick, maybe even multiple times, about five years ago.

Why do teams do that?

How much does it cost to buy it from some team slotted around 25th or so?

Would it ever be possible for a small market team like ours to get in on buying such a pick? Why or why not?

I'm just thinking how a Burke, WCS, Adetokunbo draft would be sick. And we'd have all three, Hayward, Burks, Favors, Kanter, even Tomic, and our 1st rounder next year to all dangle to potentially move into the top five in 2014 in what should be a loaded draft.

If I were you, at this juncture, I would give up on Tomic, I think Evans is better for the JAzz than he is.

Also, WHo is WCS. Curious.

Evans blows. Tomic was just the MVP of his league and put up strong stats in doing so. I'm not saying he's starter material but there's hope he could be our first big off the bench. Evans should never be the first anything off the bench.

Willey-Cauley Stein.

Our three bigs would be sick potentially. If Adetokunbo developed, we'd have a wing rotation of Burks, Hayward, Adetokunbo, Carroll. And we'd have Burke at point with Burks backing him up.

I could maybe live with that eight man rotation. It would be fun if nothing else.

The last two games Evans got minutes, he showed that he may be able to be pretty solid. His rebounding numbers are off the charts. remarkable really. Also, he blocks shots and is quite nimble/agile. I think he can make it in the league as an 8th or 9th guy of the bench on a pretty good team.

The reason teams sell first round picks for pet rocks is that the pick has a guaranteed contract with it at least for a couple of years. Second round picks have no guarantee with them. Once you get out of the lottery or high lottery the probability of a low first round pick being a better player than someone in the second round or free agency is probably slim. Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur were second round picks and Wesley Matthews was undrafted. If you look at the DLeague there are a lot of guys who were late first round picks high second round picks in recent drafts waiting for a call to the show.

Thanks man. Any idea how much it would cost to buy one?

$3 million is the number I recall, which is another strike against such a deal (the up-front costs + the guaranteed contract).

I have no idea if this is correct, or if the new CBA has changed things.

3M is a one-time cash payment paid to the seller, plus we take on the 1st round player's salary?

New CBA only allow 3M in cash transfers per year, as opposed to the 3M limit per transaction that was in effect five years ago.

One could argue though that under the new CBA first round picks offer pretty good value for money. Sure you're tied up with the contracts, but they're a cheap option to fill out your roster.
