Just a though, but could we cut Booker (due 5 million next year) and re-sign him to a longer (but less lucrative) contract?

Like cut him, and offer him a 4 year 16 million dollar contract? Is that possible?
 
It's against the rules to negotiate a contract with a non-free agent last time I checked. But I'm shooting from the hip.

Long term, I'd personally rather target Patrick Patterson if the Jazz don't get a floor-spacing big elsewhere.

Probably right, but doing these things under the table can't be hard, especially when the person in question has been very vocal about wanting to stay with the team long-term.

Looks like with Boozer he became a restricted free agent when the team released him. Booker would become an unrestricted one.

Well he is going to become a UFA this year or next year.

Point would be to lock him up before the cap expands. The point for him would be to gain security.
 
He's going to make more than $5 million when he signs his next contract. They'll need to deal with it next year, but I expect them to keep him at his current price tag (unless they have to include his contract in a trade for a significant acquisition. I personally would like to see them keep him this year and re-evaluate his role after next season. I want to see how he improves from this past season before deciding to invest long-term.

Agree. If we don't pick up his option he becomes an UFA. I'm sure the team could talk parameters with his agent. Can't imagine it hasn't happened before with players in a similar situation. The rules are designed to prevent tampering by other teams, not the one that already has his contract. Sure he could pull a Boozer. But if he's resigned to a higher deal it prevents Utah from using that cap space. I think they just let him play out his contract and then make a decision next summer to try to re-sign him or not.
 
You can decline a player's option and then resign that player. The Rockets declined Parsons option last year with hopes of signing him to a long term deal... then Dallas swooped in.

We could waive him (his contract isn't a team option it is unguaranteed) but then he'd go through the waiver process.

However, if we used him in a trade and the team that acquired him waived him we would have to wait a year.

I believe we can do an extension or renegotiation and extension.
 
I thought that he had a partially guaranteed contract, not an option. If that's the case, wouldn't the Jazz have to waive him (and expose him to waivers) allowing another team to roll the dice on his sub $5 million for one year. He had a pretty good year for the Jazz. I have a hard time seeing it as something that would work smoothly.
