Countdown to a Letdown--aka Jazz trade deadline 2014

Is it just me, or are trade rumors eerily quiet this year? We only have 3 days left and I haven't read anything regarding rumors. Actually feels like a good omen for the Jazz.

Ya, core4 has been saying that there are way more sellers than buyers all along

I just hope it's the calm before the storm but I don't have really hope for a trade involving Marvin or RJ. In fact I'm pretty sure RJ is UNTRADEBLE! And there is little hope for Marvin. Hell, I was just watching "The Third Birdmaster" on Grantland, Bill and Jalen did not even mention Marvin. They mentioned Afflalo, Turner, Hawes, Gasol, Young, Green and Stuckey as players who could help teams to get over the hump and I kind of agree. If DL can do anything it will be a hell of a job but personally I don't see it happening.

The only thing that I know for certain is that the Jazz will refuse to take back any contracts that last past this year. That is probably the deal breaker in most trades. We would have to trade expiring contracts for expiring contracts.

After last season I'm expecting nothing big for any teams out there. I'd be utterly shocked if the Jazz made any kind of a trade. I don't think the FO is only shopping RJ and MW, I think basically everyone is being evaluated long term

Has there ever been a trade deadline without a trade?

I'm guessing not. The fact that there isn't much rumbling and mumbling signifies the usual crowd isn't in the mix. That means a trade has to happen and it's going to be a quiet player, The Utah Jazz.

With the lack of movement and considering the uncertainty in the NBA trade market, the trade with Golden State for two unprotected firsts was completely genius (weren't there some seconds two?). We might not get something for RJ, but if we did that would be just greedy (although awesome!) We have already won the trade war. If we get something further that would be great, but not necessary to have made the year's trade balance be an overwhelming success. Also, if you are pro-tank, how can you hate on RJ who helps the tank, but isn't an obvious "play the cheerleader" move like playing JL3 would be.
It just appears to me that some people like to gripe and complain. . .

I don't see how Marvin is anywhere close to untradeable. His contract isn't that overpaid, and it only has a half-year left. If a team is interested in signing him next year, then trading for him now will give you the inside tract of retaining him for cheap.

J
How does trading for him now give a team an advantage of retaining him for cheap? He's an unrestricted FA. Are you suggesting he'd automatically give someone a "hometown discount?"

What makes him virtually untradeable is his contract. Not too many contenders have bad contracts/disposable player(s) making $7.6M (or roughly that to fit within the CBA trade rules). I checked every playoff contender. There are only a handful where you could make a match with a) players not part of their core rotation; b) some combination of salaries that fit. Beyond that, you then have to consider the need of those teams and if other similar or better players are available on the market.

Indiana - Danny Granger $14M. Is MW or RJ an upgrade?
Miami - Haslem $4.3M (2 yr); Battier $3.3M.
Toronto - Salmons $7.6M (2 yrs), Fields $6.3M (2 yrs), Lowry $6.2M, Hayes $5.7M (2 yrs), Novak $3.8M (3 yrs).
Atlanta - Elton Brand $4M, several others at $1M+. Getting L. Williams at $5.2M (2 yr) would require additional assets.
Chicago - Boozer $15.3M (2 yrs), Gibson $7.6M (4 years), Hinrich $4M, Dunleavy $3.2M (2 years)
Washington - Vesely $3.3M, Seraphin $2.8M, Booker $2.4M
Brooklyn - No one.
Charlotte - Gordon $13.2M,
New York - Stoudemire - $22M (2 years), J.R. Smith $5.6M (3 years)
Detroit - Villanueva $8.6M, Jerebko $4.5M (2 yrs)
Cleveland - Clark $4.3M (2 years), Gee $3.3M (2 years)

Oklahoma City - Perkins $8.7M (2 years), Sefolosha $3.9M, Collison $2.6M (2 years).
San Antonio - Diaw $4.7M, Bonner $3.9M.
Portland - Robinson $3.5M (3 years), Wright $3M (2 years)
LA Clippers - Dudley $4.3M (3 years), Barnes $3.3M (4 years)
Houston - No one. Asik $8.4M (2 years). Asking price has been very high.
Phoenix - Emeka Okafor $14.5M
Golden State - Speights $3.5M (3 years). Trade exceptions, but no 1st round pick.
Dallas - Dalembert $3.7M (2 years), Ellington $2.7M (2 years)
Memphis - Prince $7.2M ( 2 yrs), Koufos $3.0 (2 yrs)
Minnesota - Mbah a Moute $4.6M (3 yrs).
Denver - Miller $5M (2 yrs), Mozgov $4.4M (3 yrs), Arthur $3.2M (2 yrs), Foye (NO!!!!!) $3M (3 yrs)
LA Lakers - Blake $4M, Kaman $3.2M

WE can say "trade him to Charlotte (or Detroit or Memphis)" all we want, but it takes a willing party on the other end. And from what I've heard, there are a ton of sellers and not many teams wanting to buy.

Agree. It would have been nice to "double-dip" and get yet another asset for RW, Rush or Biedrins. Already got a return on those 3.
Trade Marvin and the minutes go up for Kanter, Evans and perhaps Gobert. How many extra games do we lose because of that?
Even IF a trade partner could be found for RJ, like you said, he's really not hurting the tank. Deduct Jefferson and Burks plays more, offset by whoever comes over in a deal and/or Clark, Evans or Thornton getting some burn at SG/SF.

Marvin would be a definite upgrade over 33 year old Prince. If you're Memphis, sitting one and a half games out of the playoffs it makes sense. Memphis is the 5th worse 3PT team shooting wise, and last in attempts. Marvin fits the bill to play some SF and PF for them. The price they have to pay for us taking on Prince's 7.7 next year is their first round draft pick. It will be in the 13-18 range. If they can't move Prince it really handicaps them next year, they are over the salary cap and have no room for improvement with Gasol, Randolph, and Conley's contracts taking up the lion's share. Adding Marvin lets them resign a decent player that would salary wise be impossible next year if he was a UFA.
