Our governor has talked about students wearing face masks when they go back and I just smfh. Like wtf? My 5 year old is gonna wear a mask all day? And what happens when one kid who has the virus comes in, and takes it off to itch his face, or eat at lunch, his hands touching desks in the rooms and tables in the lunch rooms or doors when he goes to close a stall to take a dump? It just does not make much sense to me.

They’re also talking about a split schedule and on that too I’m like wtf??? So how does that work with switching classes in the hallways? Or in the classes? Every kid is always going to be six feet apart? How? Seems retarded. We’re doing well as a district with the remote learning imo but we also have a 1-to-1 initiative at the high school level and most don’t have that but yeah, I don’t know. I 99.5% think we’re done for this school year and think there’s about a 40% chance we don’t go back in September.

Yeah, schools are a really tough variable to figure out.

How has teaching from home been for you? Do you think it's an effective approach for what could possibly be an entire school year?

My mom is an elementary school counselor, she hates working from her home

It sucks. It’s far more work and effort than at school. If I didn’t have any kids, I’d feel differently but I do have children like many, if not most, educators.

So far as being effective, I think that’s a broad, relative term. I have a very strict curriculum. It typically leaves little flexibility or differentiation. That said, administration for the most part has been reasonable through all this. They’ve allowed us to adjust lessons given the situation we’re in. For me, I can accomplish more than many in other districts too. We have a 1-to-1 initiative so all students at the high school have a school-issued laptop. Almost all students, despite being in an extremely poor town have internet access. There are ways we provide for them to grab WiFi too for those who don’t have it at home. So given the situation we’re in, yes, I think we’ve managed to be effective at the high school level. For me, I’d estimate 85-90% of the kids are doing the work. Not necessarily every assignment but enough to pass which for many, sadly, is good enough in their eyes. Having said all that, any kid wi th half a brain is probably cheating. I caught two kids like the second day and made a comment in Google Classroom about it to make sure kids knew not to. Truthfully, I really don’t give a **** too much if they are. So long as it’s not on writing assignments.
