Team gandalfe:

PG - Russell Westbrook / Darren Collison
SG - JJ Redick / Alec Burks
SF - Carmelo Anthony / Wesley Matthews
PF - Tristan Thompson / Kyle Kuzma
C - DeMarcus Cousins / Pau Gasol

Team Ellis269:

PG - Damian Lillard / Cory Joseph
SG - Rodney Hood / Kent Bazemore
SF - Joe Ingles / Aaron Gordon
PF - Derrick Favors / Dario Saric
C - Rudy Gobert / Jonas Valanciunas

gandalfe's Case:

In the back court, we start with the reigning MVP and points leader, only the 2nd person ever to average a triple double in a season, Russell Westbrook. Right beside him is a drop dead 3 point shooter who doesn't need the ball in his hands to make a difference, JJ Redick

The forwards consist of Carmelo Anthony, a 3 time Olympic gold medalist, 10 time all star, 6 time All-NBA, 24000 point scorer, the only person ever to score 62 pts with 0 turnovers; and Tristan Thompson, NBA Champion and rebounding machine, a true team player and glue guy.

The center is Demarcus Cousins, 3 time all-star, one of only 3 people ever to have back-to-back 20pt/20rb/10ast games, and absolute beast, and one of the best centers in the league, who has recently developed a 3pt shot that has to be respected (.375).

My starters alone averaged over 100 pts a game (101.5, to be precise), 31.3 rebounds, and nearly 20 assists (19.6).

The reserves are a mix of savvy veterans who can give you 20 minutes of power, wily scorers, and youth.

Westbrook is the undisputed leader of the team, setting the tempo (fast) and has enough determination to power their way through anything that other team has to offer.

Ellis269's Case:

Starters

Rudy Gobert
Derrick Favors
Joe Ingles
Rodney Hood
Damian Lillard

Bench

Jonas Valanciunas
Dario Saric
Aaron Gordon
Kent Bazemore
Cory Joseph

I decided to surround the Wasatch Front with guys who can shoot and space the floor. Jingles still provides a level of perimeter defense and passing, while Lillard, Jingles and Hood focus on playmaking and outside shooting. I'm counting on a jump from Favors, Jingles and Hood replacing Hayward's offensive production. My bench was built to support my starters and offer lineup flexibility. Several guys can play multiple roles and fit well together allowing me to focus on matchups and mismatches. I have guys who can shoot, defend, pass and run the floor in transition.

good luck to dame dolla defending westbrook.
good luck to ingles defending carmelo anthony.

gandalfe is my pick.

It's hard to go against a team full of Jazz players, but if you ask DL, he would trade our current team for a Cousins/Westbrook tandem (even with Crymelo thrown in) 10 times out of 10.

gandalfe for me.

Westbrook >>>>> Lilliard
This is a no brainer
Redick = Hood
JJ is a better shooter than Hood, but Hood is a better slasher. Call it even.
Carmello >>> Ingles
Carmello is simply a phenomenal talent, and I think he'd do better if he didn't have to handle the burden of being the man.
Thompson << Favors
That is, if Favors can stay healthy.
Cousins < Gobert
Cousins and Anthony Davis are the only ones who can challenge Gobert as the best center in the league, and Cousins has something to prove in his first full season away from the horrible show that is the Kings.

The assumption that Favors is healthy is a scary one to me.

Idk how Ellis is getting this far tbh.

Well, tbh, gandalfe is relying on depth from another Jazzman who has had even more injuries than Favors and a rookie who has yet to play one NBA minute. IMO, gandalfe is also being a "homer" by having Burks and Kuzma on his team. And a former Jazzman we all still love.

I'm still undecided on this matchup. With voting as tight as it is, I realize I'm kind of like a swing state in this one.

For sure. Burks and Kuz were awful picks.

Damn, I'm having as hard a time as Hayward trying to make a decision. Vote for Ellis and he's likely through to the next round. Vote for gandalfe and I tie things up. And how do I vote against Rudy, Rodney and Joe and Favs?

Just pick who you would think would win.

I think I have generally superior players, but he does have the advantage of having actual real team chemistry. Of course, everyone always complains that Favors and Gobert are a bad pairing...

Preparing my response on The Poster's Tribune. Should have it done by 4:00. I actually have three versions right now: vote for gandalfe, vote for Ellis and split my vote by not voting.

Ellis269 wins the tie-breaker by receiving 9/16 of the possible votes from the participants of this competition.
