What's new

Dante Exum everybody!

He's raw, but we saw flashes.
I think Exum will be worked in as a backup to Burke and Burks for this year. He needs to work on his shooting, handles, get his confidence up and get in NBA shape. By the trade deadline in 2016, I think Burke will be moved. Neto will slide in as the backup PG.

LOL.. what??!! He was clearly better than Burke out there on the court. He was quicker. He was much more decisive. He passed better, made plays when nothing was on, created opportunities, etc.

The guy needs to start from day 1 IMO. That's what LeBron did and it didn't do him no harm.

You can see why people thought he is a top tier-1 talent in the '14 Draft along with Parker, Wiggins and Embiid.
But remember, he is the youngest of tier-1, only 18.9 years old, and the most inexperienced. How he performs against top competition has not been tested. Give him some time, lower your expectations.

I can't state how wrong this is. Exum is not ready to be a starter in the NBA. The Jazz FO told they'll go with a unique guard rotation. I am guessing Exum comes off the bench and play both 1 and 2 throughout the game, gets around 28-32 mpg.

You've seen the SL match right? You saw how slow Burke was physically and how slow he was making decisions? It's like he was playing at 1/2 the speed of Exum.

I was impressed with how much of a PG he actually is. Has great vision and doesn't dominate the ball too much, which is my biggest knock on Burke (holds ball too long without going anywhere at times).

His handle is loose, but you have to expect that from a tall, young guard. He never panicked though when faced with pressure, which is nice to see. That being said, Philly guards weren't pressing that tough. Will be interesting to see when he is defended by a smaller, super-quick guard.

Right now I see a slightly shorter, more athletic Livingston. I think someone made that comp earlier in the draft process, but I didn't think it would be accurate. He isn't as good offensively 1-on-1 as I thought he would be, but he is a way better PG than I thought he would be.

OT:

Thought Hood looked good too. Got lost on defense a couple of times, but played solid D from what I saw for the most part. All of his shots looked good and were in the flow of the offense. You can tell he lost confidence at the end though. He had 2 nice And-1's that showed his ability to score.

OK a lot of highlights over a course of a year are very deceiving. Showing the greatest moments that year. Which is cool to see ability but, single game highlights are more important to me. You can see what they can do in total over a course of a game to put things in proper perspective.
I doubted this guy right up to the day we drafted him. "Just another one of those athletic guards that can't shoot that end up busting". I labeled him without researching.
After studying him in depth and seeing his vision and quick first step. I was like wow. This guy could be special. But I still had my doubts because I have seen highlights like his over the course of a year with other players.

After watching last nights game highlights.........WOW All this happened in 1 game???? This guys vision is incredible.
This game is different then his other highlights. He can be blazing into the lane and hitting the open man without slowing down.
That is rare to be able to react that quickly.

Tony Parker - Has the same quick first step and speed, crossover, and aggression that he has. That play where he looked towards the top of the key and turned the other direction and crossed the guy over and blazed past him.............. That is Parker's same move! Non stop attacking the paint the way Parker does.

Penny Hardaway
- He his about the same length as Hardaway and build. Both came in very skinny but long. Which helps him see over the defense. That pass where he hit Malcom Thomas underneath for the dunk. No way he could of seen that being 6'2.

Stockton - PATIENCE. Stockton was a master at being patient and waiting for things to develop. That pick and roll with Gobert showed he could be more methodically and wait for the big guys to get in position rather then just driving in fast all the time. Again small sample size but its great to see.

Jeremy Evans - Yes I just listed 1 hall of famer, 1 soon to be, and Hardaway who probably would of been without injuries. AND THEN JEREMY EVANS. lol
His Quick jump!! That play where he stole the ball and dunked it. I think all 3 of those guys literally were shocked at how fast that whole sequence happened. I didn't think he could dunk it in time as it seemed like the other guys were closer to the basket. Dante bounced up so fast. They didn't even have enough time to process what was happening before he sprung up for that dunk. They were in slow motion.

Not trying to over hype the guy. Just pointing out qualities that are somewhat rare. Consistency is key and being able to handle the NBA once teams start scouting your game. And being able to keep up that high energy all game.
So we have a long season to go. And like someone said in the video. There will be times where we will remember he is 19 years old.
BUT again WOW. I can't believe we have this guy. He is something special.

I don't think you are overhyping. The kids talent just jumps off the screen when you watch him. I saw Tony Parker/Kobe on the play he blew by the guy and used the basket as a protection for a layup. Kobe might have dunked it but I've seen him do that move many times. I am super excited. Kid needs to get stronger and in better shape, work on his shot and clean up his dribble but I didn't see any major concerns at all.

I love him. Saw some dogging on him in the game thread and just SMH. Can we just never be happy? Here is what espn had to say about him in their day 2 grades. We should be very excited about him folks.

Dante Exum, Utah Jazz | Grade: A-
Hype machine, activate! Comparisons to a young Kobe Bryant, Penny Hardaway and Brandon Roy were flying around after Exum’s first game, and his displays of smooth athleticism and skill were often breathtaking. Although there were better overall performances elsewhere, no one flashed more star potential than Exum did. With his vision and first step, he has lead guard written all over him.

Kobe, penny, roy.... what position do those guys play?

Lead guard?

Lets just make him a point guard already

How long would it take a player to significantly improve their shot, handles and use of the left hand.

Is it something we should see gradual improvement in over a few years or could he get it down by mid-season?
