What's new

Dante Exum is back and bigger. Already.

"Dante Exum strutted through Zions Bank Basketball Center earlier this week, talking to friend and fellow Australian point guard Hugh Greenwood, who was preparing for a workout at the same time.

The Jazz point guard doesn't have to be in Salt Lake City right now. After all, summer league is still over a month away. But ask Exum and he'll tell you straight up: This is an important offseason for him, and his development. As such, he's made the decision to be as close to the Jazz coaching staff as possible.

And that's why Exum is back. He looks a little bigger. He's been in the weight room daily. He's growing an Afro. These are all changes a little more than a month removed from an up-and-down rookie season.

"I thought last year was good, and I thought it was a good step for me," Exum said. "I think I had a big learning curve, but I did learn a lot and now I think I know what I have to do to improve."

So this is what Exum faces heading into next season. Most of the Jazz core is in place throughout the lineup. Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors make an imposing frontcourt. Gordon Hayward has emerged as a do-it-all wing. Rodney Hood had a terrific ending to his rookie campaign. Alec Burks will return from injury in October, and his scoring likely will be a welcome addition to the lineup."

Hope this is true. Looking forward to seeing what kind of shape he is in at the beginning of the season as it should be a good indicator of the type of year he is going to have. One of his biggest issues last season seemed to be conditioning, along with aggression, & I believe that both of those problems were related. He went from being able to physically over-match his competition to competing against professional athletes & I believe that it caused him to adjust his style of play in order to not hurt the team. An entire off-season of NBA strength & conditioning, along with a better understanding of the offensive system, should make a significant difference & I expect that the aggressive style of play that he had displayed prior to last season will return as his confidence in his physical abilities increases. Last year was certainly a struggle for him, but it did nothing to disprove the fact that he has elite physical tools (as shown by his defensive success) & star potential. As he continues to grow & add strength (as well as become more comfortable in his role on the team), I expect to him to improve significantly over the next few years (especially 1-2 years from now). With how physically advanced he already is, it can be easy to forget that his body is still developing.

Sorry to pop bubbles, but average growth in 19-20 years is about a quarter inch. Maybe they are counting his 'fro?

You do realize that probably 75 % of men don't grow after 19 years old, and rarely women do. Do you know how to calculate average?

Interesting. Thanks. But let's take a closer look at the image.

So on average, there's MAYBE a 3mm increase in height between 19 and 20. That's about 1/10th of an inch. So I guess I'm a bit surprised.

What average are you referring to, mode, median or mean? And which Pythagorean mean: arithmetic, geometric or harmonic? They are soooo hard to calculate, maybe you can help me, please.

I am glad we found an expert on male growth and mathematics. Can you provide the study you used to determine that 75% do not grow at all after age 19?

Yeah, didn't think so.

fair point on average. I was looking at 95 th percentile that increases from 74 to 74.25 inches from age 19 to 20. Dante is ~78 inches tall so a quarter inch would not be surprising to me. Thanks for blowing up the image, that was helpful.

Mean = average. I don't know where median and mode come into play with an individual who is clearly outliers to the actual graph that you are referring to in the first place. I don't know the exact number of those who actually grow after 19, but I would bet money that more than half of men stop growing by 19. If one individual grows 1 inch and 3 don't grow, then the average, or median if you will, is going to be 1/4 inch. The whole point is any averages are based on a whole population and don't mean jack squat about an individual, especially if that individual is an outlier to that population.

It is perfectly possible that most men grow between 19 and 20. According to the chart, one can expect a growth between 0.5 mm (1/50th of an inch) for the shortest people, to about 5 mm for tallest (1/5th of an inch). I highly doubt even 5mm is perceptible at all. So for all intents an purposes, no notable growth happens, even if, technically, men continue to grow.
