You can't expect anything for an individual based on a chart. My older brother was 5'11 in 9th grade and is still 5'11, same with my best friend from HS (he was actually 6'0, but didn't grow after 9th) I was probably 5'4 in 9th grade and continued growing to 5'10 at about 19-20 years old. To use that chart to say that Exum couldn't have grown an inch is just idiotic. That chart takes a huge population and plugs it into a formula to show the growth curve.

You are off by a factor of 10. The chart is in cm not mm.

I don't know the exact number of those who actually grow after 19, but I would bet money that more than half of men stop growing by 19. Colloquially, many folks commonly refer to "average" as "arithmetic mean." Mathematicians and statisticians have different ways to describe the "measurement of central tendency of a population." including the ones I mentioned.

To teach you the basics on one of these, median is the number separating the higher half of a population from the lower half. So in your example of 0,0,0,1, the median is 0 and the arithmetic mean (colloquial average) is 0.25. The median is not 0.25 as you state. Let me ask you the question you asked to me: "do you even know how to calculate an average?"

To have the average growth be 0.25 inches and more than half the population growing zero, is possible if you have a Poisson other highly asymmetric distribution. And while human characteristics are never perfectly symmetrical or normal (Gaussian distribution) they often often approach this, so your hypothesis is farfetched.

I am glad that you changed our opinion from 75% to 50% of men do not grow between 19-20 -- you are moving towards reality, congrats on that. But you still have not given me any empirical data to back it up -- or is this just your total guess?

Great use of big words. YOU ARE ENTIRELY MISSING THE POINT. YOUR CHART IS WORTHLESS WHEN TALKING ABOUT AN INDIVIDUAL. I DON'T CARE HOW MANY GROW AFTER THE AGE OF 19, MOST THAT DO ITS GOING TO BE NEGLIGIBLE ANYWAY. THE POINT IS THAT DOESNT MEAN THAT 1 PERSON CAN'T GROW AN INCH AFTER 19. ACCORDING TO YOUR CHART, ITS IMPOSSIBLE FOR EXUM TO BE TALLER THAN 6'2"

The chart shows average growth for their sample population. That means it is normal for a 19 year old of Exum's height to grow 1/5th of an inch. An individual can grow an inch at 19, or nothing at all from 16 upwards. Silesian was a bit, um, optimistic in his projections, but he is essentially correct. I don't see the point you're trying to make at all.

My point is this chart doesn't mean jack squat about how much Exum actually grew, and that its plenty possible for a 19 year old to grow 1".

Another point I'm trying to make is about individuals. You can take 1 individual, and he may not grow, but possibly could grow 1-2 inches. If you take 10 people, and average their increase in height, it's probably going to be closer to the 1/5 of an inch. you could have 2 guys that grow 1 inch each, and 8 guys that don't grow at all and BAM!, 1/5 of an inch average.

I made the point that a person can grow an inch and in fact I gave an example when this happened (the Admiral) -- so enjoy arguing with yourself.

If someone had shown me a nurse measuring Dante at 6'7" tall, I'd be like "weird, he's an outlier, but fantastic that he's our PG." But we are talking about someone who saw him and said "jeez, he looks an inch taller" The data informs us of the likelihood that this observation is correct. It does not say that it is false. Getting it now?

The 95th percentile means that 5% of the population is above that number, and in that top 5% population is most of the NBA.

Knowledge is power, stop being afraid of big words and go read a book or two.
