What's new

Dante Exum is back and bigger. Already.

My point is this chart doesn't mean jack squat about how much Exum actually grew, and that its plenty possible for a 19 year old to grow 1".

I'm getting bored so I'll stop after this. The chart illustrates data that helps us to test the reasonableness of the hypothesis. There is no data point on the chart that says "Dante Exum, 2015" so you cannot glean particular data from an average, so on this point you are merely stating the obvious. It is possible for a 19 year old to grow 1" in a year, I made that point earlier. Is is "plenty possible"? I'm not sure how much "plenty" is but gosh, I hope so I'd love to have a more freakishly long/tall PG. The data informs us that this is unlikely, not that it is impossible. Have a great day.

I made the point that a person can grow an inch and in fact I gave an example when this happened (the Admiral) -- so enjoy arguing with yourself.

If someone had shown me a nurse measuring Dante at 6'7" tall, I'd be like "weird, he's an outlier, but fantastic that he's our PG." But we are talking about someone who saw him and said "jeez, he looks an inch taller" The data informs us of the likelihood that this observation is correct. It does not say that it is false. Getting it now?

The 95th percentile means that 5% of the population is above that number, and in that top 5% population is most of the NBA.

Knowledge is power, stop being afraid of big words and go read a book or two.

Quit talking down to me. I know exactly what the 95 % means and have read plenty of books. Statistics are crap when looking at this case and mean as little or even less than someone saying "he looks taller". I don't know or even care that much if Exum actually grew as he is already plenty tall for a pg. Quit pointing to a stupid growth chart. Its as useful as using BMI to tell a weightlifter that he's fat.

To be fair to you, I think we probably are mostly in agreement about Dante and whether or not he grew. I don't know if Dante grew or not. I'll wait until we get an official measurement. All your chart shows to me is that if Dante did grow 1 inch after 19, then that would be outside the norm, and I don't think anybody really needed the chart to know that. The way you presented it, it was like you were saying that its proof that he didn't, and I disagreed with that.

This paragraph was telling:

"I've learned that people will talk," Exum said. "It's always going to be something. I tried hard not to force things last year. I didn't want to be that guy who was forcing shots. Last year, I wanted to find my feet."

Most of us thought this might be the case.

Also, was that a subtle shot at Trey? Probably not but I found it interesting.

No. The preceding paragraph stated:

"Exum says he's turned off the outside noise. For him, the only things that matter are the opinions of the coaching staff, his teammates and family."

That outside noise is the fans and media pundents I believe. It's here, on this forum, where he could find fans critiquing his offensive game. So, that's a dig at the fans and pundents, but not really. I mean he's not telling the fans to go pound salt, but I think he's reflecting on us, not Trey......

I was referring to this:

"I tried hard not to force things last year. I didn't want to be that guy who was forcing shots."

I knew who he was talking about when he says "outside noise".

Yes, I understand exactly what sentence you were referring to. What I'm saying is that he was reflecting on critiques he got from fans and pundents. The fans here, for instance, often dwelt on his lack of progress offensively. And so I think he's just talking about what his philosophy/approach to his offensive game was last season. I don't think, for instance, that at that point in the quote he was actually thinking "Trey is a chucker, I didn't want to be like him". I assumed, always risky I'll grant you, that that entire quote was just him stating some of what his approach was, and a reflection on critiques that originated with the fan base and perhaps the pundents. Not sure of the latter, because I got on the wagon late, and didn't read many pundents.

But, yes, I understood which quote you were referring to....

I guess I could say I would not really expect him to take a shot at any other teammate. The fans here did criticize his unwillingness to shoot more, after all, and since just before the quote, he stated that he did not listen to "outside noise", I just assumed the statement that he did not want to be "the guy forcing shots" was more a reply to we fans, and less likely to be an under the counter shot at one of his teammates. We criticized him right here on this forum for not shooting more, did we not? Anyway, different assumptions, neither can be proved. Only opinions....

for what it's worth i saw a lot of Dante's old man when he played in the Australian league years ago, he's a good 6-8 and looked reasonably thick. I think Dante's going to end up being a good 6-7 and noticably thicker than he is now. ie a beast at his position

Well, we all know that Trey IS that guy, so I think it stands to reason that Dante could be referring to Trey, instead of just chuckers in general.
