Dante Exum: shoulder injury

I also think comparing curry to Embiid is silly as well.

Curry had one season which was pretty similar to Embiid last year in terms of time on the court, but that was also backed up by two fully healthy seasons.

Embiid has played 31 games, in 3 seasons, at 24 minutes a game. Due to issues that have completely derailed guys his size in the past.

Yes, he is incredibly talented, but that is a huge risk.

Embiid didn't take a discount like Curry did... that deal is not good. Maybe if the last year or two (not sure if that is legal) are TO then its okay, but man that is a lot of money.

What if we offer $35M and he doesn't see that as good. Him accepting the QO (which we will extend to make sure he is restricted) might be his only option if he doesn't want to lock in.

Nerlens Noel turned down $80M this year (or close to it) and has made less money and had serious injuries. These guys have irrational confidence... Noel got the QO.

I could see a similar stalemate happening... I could also see him being smarter than that and going for something in the range of 30-40M. I don't know that the Jazz will offer that.

I can't imagine this would play well in the media, but I wonder if we did a 4/30 right now if he'd take it. Would save us some cap room because I think his caphold is like $10M.
I would love a 4/30 and be down with a 4/40

Some may say your numbers are crazy, but I think that's actually a good ballpark. At worst - based on what we saw in summer league and two preseason games - Exum looked like he'd be a very good backup, with a lot of upside. Maybe a team option for the 3rd and 4th years in case he doesn't recover fully from his injury?

.

First off, I disagree with your "these guys" comment. These guys are individuals, and capable of learning from each other's mistakes. Just because Noel made a dumb mistake doesn't mean Dante will make the same, and might learn from Noel's example.

Also, it's helpful to put the Noel situation in context. Noel saw all the big contracts handed out the season before, and he and his agent misjudged the situation, much like George Hill. I doubt NBA players are lining up to be the next guy who burns himself by assuming he can make more money. At the very least, you have to believe the agents are all over the situation.

Anyway, you can count on one hand pretty much the number of free agents who have turned down a contract offer to take the QO. Monroe and Noel are the only ones I can think of off hand.

If the Jazz can get Exum to agree to something between 4/30 and 4/40 they should jump on it. There is some small risk, but he was showing that he can at least be a rotation player and this injury was the definition of a freak accident. It wasn't even that he was driving in recklessly. So injuries shouldn't be a real concern more than any other player. There is some risk, though since we haven't seen a large sample of him playing how he was this preseason. I think the big mistake would be signing him to a shorter deal (like 2 years) Either lock him up now in the hopes of keeping him long term, or just let him go. No half measures, please DL.

Someone said season ending. Great.

Professional athletes by nature hav irrational confidence... it isn't logical to believe you can be the best of the best... that's what I meant by these guys. To get to where they are they have to have that.

It may not be the QO but it might be a one year make good contract. Guys misjudge the market all the time. Whether that means taking the QO or a one year deal I don't really see a big difference. I'm not sure the Jazz offer him the 4/40. Even that is a gamble.

My prediction is he gets like what Green in Memphis or Mirotic got. 2 years at a good price... if he gives us a team option price goes up... lower price we give him a player option.

Again, way to much of a generalization IMO. Every personality is different, and Exum doesn't come off as overconfident IMO. Noel is kind of a dumbass all around, and has made many stupid decisions. Not really the typical NBA player at all, really.

Anyway, I think we've hashed this out enough for now. You and Cy and stitches all seem to be seeing things similarly, so I'm going to feel a little bad when I end up being right.

Who cares if you're right or not. All I care about is that Dante recovers and proves my skepticism wrong. This is a message board. Whether you're right or wrong isn't going to change your life or anyone on here. Grow up.
