What's new

Deron is coming back to Utah.

I see the point you are trying to make. If you want to be a good defender you have to be strong in all areas. Memo and Jefferson obviously suck on defense because teams can just expose them by putting them in situations where they have to guard on the perimeter with pick n' rolls. The same thing goes for if you are a bad post defender, teams are just going to expose you by putting you in post situations. Obviously in today's game it isn't as bad to be a poor post defender as it is to be a poor pick n roll defender because more teams can run the pick n roll more effectively than posting, but is still going to hold you back from being a complete "defensive minded" big.

Once again, just to reiterate, I'm not saying "Holy crap Kanter is a terrible defender we are screwed". I'm just saying he hasn't really shown enough to be called a "defensive minded" big. I'm not even saying he can't be considered a defensive minded big in the future.

He has not had the opportunity/time to show enough to be called much of anything. Which includes a defensive minded or non defensive minded big.

so, can you be a "defensive-minded big" before you are widely panned as a "defensive-minded big". In other words, how does one go from being a rookie to a "defensive-minded big"? Can you, Cy, imagine anything in between your own local skepticism and the pure position of "defensive-mindedness"? Answer, NO

Not sure I completely understand your question. Are you saying how can you tell if someone is a defensive minded big? Or are you saying that if Kanter becomes a better defensive player next year, does that always mean he was a defensive minded big?

Yes, see Derrick Favors. Favors has always had an advanced feeling and nose for defense. There was 0 question Favors would be a good defender from the moment he came to Utah. Even when he wasn't as good as he was at the end of the season, I think it was always apparent that it was there. I just don't get that sense from Kanter (though obviously some on this board do).

For those that say Deron would never come back to Utah:

"Of all the crazy free-agent sagas in baseball history, where would we rank this one?

Of all the nutty, convoluted, out-of-the-wild-blue-yonder twists and turns in any free agent's plot line, who could top this one?

Apparently, a wise man once told Cliff Lee that what goes around, comes around -- because one very mixed up year later, he's come right back around to the very same Phillies team that traded him, didn't want him and broke his heart.

Wow. How'd THAT happen?"

"We still have every expectation to win this year. It's hard to find fault with Cliff's decision when he chooses a spot where he and his family are comfortable, and he has a chance to win."

If what Deron said in my first post is true, if he wants to be in a city where he has a shot to win and a place where his family is comfortable, why wouldn't he come back? KOC and Deron would both be crazy to not look into the possibility. If KOC decided that he wasn't even going to call Deron, I fire him immediately. Those mistakes are the same stupid mistakes that pay AK a max deal, overpay for Harp and Memo, etc. This is a small market team. If you can get a superstar (Deron) to come back, you do it. You can't let old feelings taint your decision making, both ways (not calling Deron and overpaying for Harp, Memo, and Millsap next summer).

Deron is exactly what I would want in Utah at the PG position. However he started getting an attitude (justified or not) and let it affect the team. I do not want him back.

He is a great player. They ALL have attitudes. Kobe demanded to be traded from LA. Rondo has his issues. Shaq was traded. Malone whined every offseason. Jordan retired one day, came back the next. Duncan cries every time a ref looks at him. You deal with it. Would be happy playing the game you play, if you were Deron, and you were given no defense, black hole Jefferson as your sidekick? Nope. You would whine and complain too, and Deron was justified by it.

You under estimate pride and ego my friend.

Not really but I am not against you either. I am saying it is to early to judge what he is. That includes saying he is not defensive minded.

It has been brought to my attention I am on CY side. So yes I agree with Cy.

Damnit

All you need to do is listen to what Enes says. He constantly talks about his offensive game, and little about defense. Just sayin.

He is a 19 (now 20?) year old rookie that has hardly played any organized ball in his life. Just saying.

Maybe on Deron's side, but it would be inexcusable on KOC's side. That being said, Deron would be stupid to not look at Utah. They have an outstanding defensive front, Favors would be better than Griffin if he could run the P&R with Deron, Hayward is an above average defender and player. We are a Deron away from being a contender. Name me a better situation for Deron than Utah.
