The County Library’s annual Pumpkinpalooza will be Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Viridian Event Center in West Jordan. Watch a trebuchet launch pumpkins through the air, take part in a costume parade or enter the pie eating contest. THE CURRENT WAR — The dramatic story of the cutthroat race between electricity titans Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse to determine whose electrical system would power the modern world. 107 minutes; PG-13 (disturbing/violent images, and thematic elements); in general release.

COUNTDOWN — When a nurse downloads an app that claims to predict the moment a person will die, it tells her she only has three days to live. DOLEMITE IS MY NAME — Eddie Murphy portrays real-life legend Rudy Ray Moore, a comedy and rap pioneer who proved naysayers wrong when his hilarious, obscene, kung-fu fighting alter ego, Dolemite, became a 1970s blaxploitation phenomenon. 117 minutes; R (pervasive language, crude sexual content, and graphic nudity); Tower.

THE GREAT ALASKAN RACE — In 1925’s historic great race of mercy, a group of brave mushers travel 700 miles to save the small children of Nome, Alaska, from a deadly epidemic. 87 minutes; PG (thematic material, brief bloody images, some language and smoking); in general release.

The Salt Lake City Arts Council recently announced that the Clubhouse on South Temple (formerly the Ladies Literary Club) has been selected to receive funding. The Clubhouse is among 20 cities competing for a share of $2 million in preservation funding provided by American Express, according to nationalgeographic.com/voteyourmainstreet/. The arts council also announced a call for artists for the Block 70 temporary public art project. In collaboration with the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City, the arts council will provide opportunities for temporary vinyl murals, according to saltlakepublicart.org. Two proposals will be selected and installed consecutively for six months at the location between 100 and 200 South and Main and State Streets. Utah Valley University’s Woodbury Art Museum recently announced a call for artists for its “Hidden Voices: Aesthetics of Change” exhibit. Entries will be accepted online at uvu.edu/museum from Nov. 5-19. According to a news release, the exhibit explores the power of art to creatively explore contemporary social issues that confront the cultural beliefs and established power structures of society that challenge ideas of equity, justice and sustainability. “Hidden Voices: Aesthetics of Change” will run Jan. 14-March 17. Craft Lake City is seeking volunteers for the first Craft Lake City Holiday Market in Ogden. The inaugural event will take place Dec. 7, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at The Monarch, 455 25th St., Ogden. Grade school-aged children in grades K-6 created a bookmark design and submitted for a chance to become the official bookshop bookmarks for next year. The Utah Cultural Alliance recently announced that October is the country’s National Arts and Humanities Month. The state of Utah will celebrate with activities that raise awareness of the arts and humanities and the value the events bring to communities, according to a news release. One activity includes the 22nd annual Utah Humanities’ Book Festival with events throughout the month.
