What's new

Devin getting a little bit of love

I think Devin is fine now. I just worry about his play a few years from now when all our youngsters have become men. Who runs THAT team?

I agree. I suppose what we can hope for is accelerated growth from our youth and a 30-31 year old Devin who's matured, learned to truly lead ala Chauncey, and a perfect compliment to our young team.

That has been my thinking ever since we traded for him. He is a good PG. Like the article said, he is in the top half of starting PGs but I worry when the young guys mature if he is able to really run the team like it should be run.

I know that there has been a lot of talk about the right kind of PG for the future Jazz and I honestly feel like Teague is not a good fit. I like the idea of Kabongo and then Marshall. If the future Jazz could have a PG with Stockton-like thinking then that is the ultimate complimentary piece to the puzzle. The way that I look at it Hayward can shoot, Burks can create his own shot/be a cutter & slasher, Favors is going to be a beast and Kanter has potential to be an amazing lost post presence with a great midrange shot. All of those guys would be even better with a PG that is looking to get the team involved. A Rose/Westbrook PG would hurt the team.

You ready to write him off like that already? He's 28, he had to deal with a serious injury and he played for the worst team in decades.

He's never made a team better, and 28 is old for a PG that relies on his quickness above everything else. He has real value for a team that might have a window to use what's left of that quickness, but the Jazz are probably not that team.

Or we trade an expiring contract or one of the bigs if/when Kanter and Favors become starters for an established veteran.

I agree with the premise that Harris is an underrated PG. Maybe his best years are behind him. Or perhaps he just played on horrible NJ teams. The entire Jazz organization - players AND coaches - were in complete disarray when he arrived. Give Devin a training camp to learn the sets (whatever they'll be under Corbin). Who knows, with the young legs of Kanter, Favors, Hayward and Burks, maybe the best type of PG for this team is a guy like Harris who loves to push the ball.

NOT second-guessing .. just curious .. What makes Teague not a good fit? What makes Kabongo better for the Jazz, and better than Marshall?

Don't undersell the impact of a PG that can run the floor like a gazelle and put constant pressure on another teams defense though. Harris is particularly useful against teams with no shot blocking center, like we use to be. Its going to be either 2 or free throws every time down. Harris will never have DWill court vision, but trying to find another one of those players could be a futile waste in draft picks and money. Score first PGs are just as successful with the modern day NBA rules.

Not true at all. Dallas won 67 games the last full year he played with them at the tender age of 23. The following year he played only half a season with Jason Kidd playing the other and they only won 51, followed by only 50 the next year with Kidd running the show full time. Harris did fine in NJ the first couple years considering the talent around him. 34 wins with your only other notable player being a washed up Vince Carter isn't easy. Of course he was part of the historically bad 09/10 team, I can't make excuses there, but the total evidence is more positive than negative.

Any ups on teams he's played for can be accounted for by natural ebb and flow of a team. He hasn't made a significant impact on the teams he's played for, for better or for worse. Besides, that 67 win team had a historical playoff collapse, as his man became the face of the playoffs.

He's not the worst player in the world, but he's not that great, and the sucker's bet is that he's supposed to do anything but plateau for a few years at best. His timeline and the Jazz's timeline just does not make any sense together. Get something for him, or you either end up losing him for nothing (but savings), or you extend him and hope his performance doesn't fall off a cliff in those years.

However, since the Jazz didn't do anything to grab a PG to develop of any kind (unless you're high on this Burks as a PG idea), there are worse players to have than Harris at the moment. But the Jazz had better figure something else out eventually. And preferably for a PG that can hurt you from deep with reliability.

I still say that none of Teague, Kabongo, or Marshall are likely to better than Harris. Teague, maybe. That's the dilemma .. no elite (at least yet) PG's coming into a draft for a few years and, by then, there will be plenty of teams searching one out. It's either Harris, FA, or a less 'pure' PG.

Didn't the experts say Knight basically had to declare for the draft because Teasure is more talented and would rip the starting point guard spot from him? If that is the case, Teague would be more than capable to take over as the point guard of the future.

one of the fallouts of rebuilding is the urge to... keep rebuilding.... and hoping for the best until you land a superstar. Likelihood of that actually happening with our future draft picks is basically nothing. I agree w/ the previous posts that harris w/ his now veteran status would help this team far more than hinder it. Remember jazzfans, we don't NEED a true PG just because we are used to it. Harris can push the ball and hit 3's, burks and hayward have passing ability, and kanter/favors can hopefully keep opposing defense honest. I think the jazz are off to a great rebuild.

just b/c he doesn't record 10 assists/night doesn't make him a bad fit. Its a different team. I know its hard to see the jazz w/o a true pg, but seriously, get over stockton-syndrome. I'll take a bunch of fast young scorers + veteran pg any day over what dwill and booze had to offer.
