Did the Jazz Mess Up By Swapping their 2nd pick this draft in 2016

Isiah Whithead is averaging 6.6 ppg and 3.1 assists for the Nets. I realize they are a bad team but compare that to the production of X, Mack, Raul, Paige, Bolomboy and Wallace. Did the front office out think itself on this one? Holy Jarnell Stokes!!!!

Mack has helped the Jazz win games and has been a source of much needed scoring at times. Now he isn't perfect and has made mistakes (that cross court hail marry in the Lakers game for example) but he has been a net positive for Utah.

I do not consider that a mistake. Even if it is a "mistake" it is an inconsequential one that will not hurt the team.

It is a monumental misstep, but it is merely symptomatic of the Jazz' general failure to sacrifice enough children to Moloch in an orthodox manner.

It's not like the literature isn't out there. DL is simply ignorant of it and generally unfit to wield a sacrificial dagger. He was the wrong hire from the beginning.

The Nets paid the Jazz near the limit in cash for this pick. It was something like $2.5MM or 3

Not gonna lie tho I was really excited to see Jazz select Whitehead. He's one of the better players from NY in years. I was steadily updating the draftees thread with news/highlights of his. He's a combo guard that'd have fit in here. he's tough as nails.

He absolutely busted the 5th pick, Kris Dunn's *** on their homecourt last year...

Whitehead EASILY had the potential to stay in school and get drafted in the first round in 2017. He wanted to go pro really bad tho...

It would've been worse if Stephen Zimmerman was on the board but the Magic took him 1 spot ahead.

Still, Demetrius Jackson who was a projected 1st rd pick by everyone was also on the board. He's a PG tho and there's already a log jam. He''s most similar to Mack but more athletic.

It's on Bolomboy to make this trade work. He's who they had their sights set on in that range and figured they could afford to move back for him..

We probably wouldn't have picked Whitehead anyways. We picked who the Nets told us to pick for them.

If the Jazz took Whitehead it'd have been for D-league duty/grooming him to replace Shelvin Mack.

Rawle Alkins Fr. at Arizona is a more explosive player with plenty of similarities the Jazz could end up taking in the upcoming draft with the Warriors pick or if they're super lucky the 2nd rd.

Whitehead is more of a SG/PG that can handle some SF if needed and Alkins is more of a SG/SF that can handle some PG if needed.

A player who's also got some similarities that would render the 'loss' of Whitehead inconsequential is Utah native Fr. Frank Jackson at Duke.

Probably not the type of answer you're looking for but I'm happy for him.

Whitehead was a Top 15 recruit out of high school and unlike dozens of other blue chips out of HS in the New York/New Jersey area he opted to play nearby at Seton Hall as opposed to playing for one of the usual powerhouses.

Probably a dream come true for the kid to end up playing in Brooklyn.

Having said that I don't think The Jazz will miss out on much - he appears to be a typical combo guard that isn't particularly good at the either position. His size is intriguing for a 1 but I don't see him lasting at that position.

So like Exum?

Hey Homey, fellow tennis player here and I enjoy your threads (always something a little different). I remember at the time I was like WHAT!!! trading away a #42 for a #55 and a washing machine (semi-pro reference). But then I realized that we probably only had one roster spot available if that. Whitehead is a tantalizing prospect (looks like Brooklyn did their homework), however, as others have mentioned he's a combo guard and we were just loaded with combos, and we'd already done the #12 for George Hill deal, so another point/combo coming in. It's true there were some other good prospects available (anybody know who else is making noise after #42?), but truth is I believe that Bolomboy has a higher ceiling than any of them. And he wouldn't be on our roster if we'd taken somebody else ahead of him.

Surprisingly to me, some lamented trading #12 for George Hill. To me that was a slam dunk though I'm sure there's still some that disagree on that score as well.

Whitehead should be in the Rising Stars game at the ASB.

Yeah, all he needs is Weak Sauce to put up a few more pathetic shots like that on a platter and people might start to take notice.

I like the kid but he's a turnover machine - 6 TO's in 16 minutes this afternoon - yikes.

He could have not hit the ball so hard and his team would most likely gain possession. But hey, it's a lot more fun to go blast it into the upper deck and show everyone how strong you are.

Watch some of Rudy's blocks where he's smart enough to control where the ball goes after the block. They should have 2 categories of blocks, one's where the other team retains possession and one's where your team gains possession. Rudy would be even more impressive because he'd have a pretty decent number of the latter compared to the former.

He's being asked to go above the call of duty, due to Lin's injury.. He's no pure PG he's in the early stages of that sort of transition.

This is an absolutely absurd criticism. What kind of insane acrobatic standards do you hold 2nd rd picks to? Are you saying he should've slowed down his approach and not explode off the ground as hard as he did to try and save the block?

This is silly. Whitehead has shown the ability to score a little. So did Jordan Crawford. It will take a lot more than that. For the record I am still happy with the Bolomboy pick.

It is well within the realm of physical ability to retain possession of the ball on that play. In fact, I think it's likely Gobert would have tapped the ball down so that his teammates got the ball there.

That's what I'm saying.

I have no idea who that person is, where he was drafted, or anything else at all about him. I have no standard for him. I was pointing out that instead of blasting the ball he could have tapped it to a teammate. Watch the video. That's a possibility.

Will you be able to relax now?
