What's new

Do we have it?

Uh you mean the elite defense we have been playing in February and March with Hayward at the 3?

Golden state. Loss
Minnesota
Portland
Denver
OKC
Minessota again
Denver again

It has nothing to do with Gobert, Favors, Exum and everything to do with Hayward. Those teams all have elite small forwards.

I think it comes down to 2 things:

1. Does Exum become a starting caliber PG?
2. Do 1 of Exum, Burks, Hayward, or Hood become a a legitimate #1 scoring option?

I would be very surprised if Exum doesn't become a starting caliber PG (at the very minimum), even if it takes a couple of years for that to happen. The x-factor is if Exum develops into a full fledged star. If he does, then we may just be able to get by without having a true #1 scoring option (assuming that Exum becomes a star based on his defense, passing, & solid but not elite offense), due to the fact that Hayward has proven himself as a reliable #2 option, while both Burks & Hood have that type of offensive potential (& even Favors could become a #3 type offensive option on a championship caliber team). Like others have already said, a lot of this comes down to what type of player Exum becomes (especially on the offensive side of the ball).

If Exum becomes an offensive threat, then we may be able to become an offense by committee type of team that is good enough to get by when we combine that with an elite defense. If he doesn't, then I think we would still be short a go-to-scorer (which I don't foresee any of those players becoming). Just to be sure, I think we should do everything possible (outside of trading our core) to add a player with that type of offensive potential, to go along with the players you have listed (although I think we could do without Burke at this point).

It was debatable last season where Hayward should go 2 or 3. He is now a three who can play some at the 2. Defensively and Offensively he has has turned himself into a 3.

I think Hayward has proven that he can be a #1 scoring option for this team. I think we need another reliable player on offense at either the 2 or the 3. I think Hood or Burks or both of them will be next season.

A #1 scoring option on a title contending team is scoring 23+ per night.

We have two potential options:

Favors or Exum.

There is no way that Hayward can add 3 more points a night if some of the distribution is absorbed by Exum? If Favors continues his development, Rudy learns even 1 or two post moves, and Exum actually becomes a threat do drive the ball, Hayward will have the extra room to get the three points. Hell, if we ever got to the point where the refs would call obvious fouls committed on Hayward he would add at least 3 more free throws a game. . .

It is pretty obvious that Hayward has been playing hurt for the last few games as well. . .

I've wondered the same thing, but I've been wanting to give our staff the benefit of the doubt, since allowing him to play hurt at this point would be ****ing stupid.

Wasn't meant as a knock on Hayward. He is putting up nearly 20 ppg (with limited offensive players around him) & that is close enough to a #1 option. I just think that we need one more 20+ ppg scorer in our starting rotation (unless the rest of the starting 5 is able to average 16-18 ppg, which I don't see happening) & don't see another 20+ ppg caliber player currently on this roster. If we are going to get thru the gauntlet that is the WC playoffs some day, I think we will need a second scoring option, besides Hayward, who we can go to when the game is on the line. Moving forward (offensively), as the roster currently stands, I think we would be putting too many eggs (or balls) in Hayward's basket. Sorry for the lame Easter metaphor, but it is almost that time of the year.

Well I think Burks or Hood can be another offensive threat. Hood has shown flashes and he is still a rookie. I think with the improvement of Exum, getting Burks back and the improvement of Rudy and Hood the Jazz are going to have plenty of offense. They just need to continue to build chemistry and improve individually. This team isn't even close to where they will be in 2 to 3 years. Right now the Jazz need to improve their bench with another Big (Center) and another shooter. A guy who can create his own shot when needed. That is what is lacking with this team for right now.

Fantastic post. Though I think we are ok as far as having guys who can create thier own shot. Burks is great at that, Hayward too...... good seems to be able to..... favors can be given the Rick and then create a shot..... exum might be able to next year.

Everything else in your post is spot on.

This team is going to be good
