Does Dennis Draft Differently?

Lindsey was on 1280 at 5pm tonight. They got him talking about the draft and how he evaluates people. He said it is very difficult to project people, or project how these kids will react. It is hard to pass on a guy who you like but may not be super motivated and take a guy you wouldn't want to go to dinner with but is very motivated.

I have read a few posters say that they believe in dennis Lindsey and hope for good things in the up coming draft. I have said it too. But I got to thinking I have no idea what kind of drafter lindsey has been, or what players his teams have taken when he was on staff. I thought it would be fun to look....

I realize that this list doesn't include trades (ie Kawai Leonard) which is a huge part of player personal, but I wanted to start somewhere and will fill in or let others fill in the details.

From his Jazz Bio: "Lindsey’s responsibilities with the Spurs included directing all of the team’s player personnel matters, leading all draft-related efforts, managing the Spurs’ professional, college and international scouting aspects and overseeing the team’s analytical department,"

? He drafted Marcus Smart? Is there another one?

Anyone can look like a genius when you get lucky and draft Tim Duncan. So it really hard to tell how good he is. I do like what he says better than KOC. Maybe our scouts are the ones to give credit to for some good draft picks that have been made.

A nice PR write up no doubt, although behind closed doors I would guess "leading" might translate to "recommending to RC Buford".

if he was responsible for drafting those players then this is going to be a long long miserable tenure.

I think it is tough to evaluate him right this second. I am sure Pop had some input on their drafts and who he thought best fit his system. I guess I will take a wait and see approach. I do like hearing what Lindsey has said so far.

Another thing Lindsey said today was that Jazz management and coaches were a team he mentioned all the scouts and even the interns. He said they work together and he was trying to break down the hierarchical walls and make things flat around here in the decision making process and make it so that the we have input from everyone.

What happened to taking the bull by the horns? Sure, being a team player is great and all, but someone's got to make the final decisions, and I was kind of hoping it would be Lindsey.

Bios are always fluff. The same could have been said about Scotty Layden and Kevin O'Connor. However, I think we all know Sloan got his way when he really insisted. I'm sure Popovich and Buford, the SA GM, had more sway than Lindsay when it came to selecting Player A vs. Player B. Lindsay probably did most of the groundwork.

Leading efforts does not equal making decisions.

Ultimately, we know almost nothing about Lindsey besides that everyone's favorite organization (and deservedly so) thought highly enough of him that they put him right under RC Buford and that's a good sign.

Why do you have any favorite Rocket players?

I from there. I'm not a fan of the team but I there are some players that I've liked on their teams. Aaron Brooks, Steve Francis, Tmac, Cuttino Mobley, Moochie, Battier to name a few. (Not saying I would have liked these players on the jazz at any any point in time fyi)

Thats why this offseason holds so much intrigue. Lindsey has been with the Jazz for about 10 months and we still don't know what he is going to do. He is a mystery. The dude has got a politicians gift to talk without saying anything. He does those 20 minute radio interviews everyweek but only reveals small peeks into his managment style and decision making process.

Where KOC faces a question and gives an answer, or a 'no comment'--Lindsey says"great question" and talks for 2-3 minutes without really answering the question. Brilliant.

The only things I have picked up that relate to the draft:

1- Found out scouts were not measuring lateral quickness the way he wanted so he called them all in to teach them how he wanted it scouted. 'Athleticism is more than how high a guy can jump.'
2-Wants to remove heirachal barriers and have an open discussion within the organization about prospects.
3-He is okay using the draft to get role players rather than risking a pick, does not want to guess on any player.
