Donation ethical question

I have friends on Facebook that ask for donations so they can travel the world and make a difference in poor people's lives. Smh.

I've experienced this as well. Some cycling buddies setting up some fundraiser so they can do a bike tour from Portland to LA or something similar.

I have a mission companion who begs on Facebook for loans so he can pay his bills. But then is also showing pictures of him partying.....

Im sure he has a smart phone with the most minutes and the biggest data package. Its scandalous.

It was set up by friends of the family to show their love and allow others to DO something to help out besides send flowers.

It does not say that it was setup by friends and family. But even so that still doesn't change the point of the thread.

Several of the news stories say the donation was set up by friends of the family.

Directly from dailymail story: "A family friend has set up a fundraising page to help raise money to cover funeral costs"

They are also collecting blankets to give to charity in honor of the little boy who loved blankets.

I'm curious to know what the family can legally do with the donated money. Does it have to be used only for funeral expenses or can they give the excess away?
Are the donations considered a gift? How do the taxes work on that?

Great question. I'd guess there are no legal stipulations saying the money has to be used for anything specific. Tax wise they ARE considered a donation on the giving end and here's some information on the receiving end:

I think it is extremely dumb how much people spend to essentially place a corpse into some dirt.

I have told everyone in my family and my wife that when i die i want them to spend as little money possible.

Preferably they throw my body in a dumpster and be done with it.

Its hard enough for the living to get over the grief and whatnot without having to come up with thousands of dollars for a funeral.

The donations would NOT be tax deductible if the family has not set up a tax exempt entity to receive the donations through the IRS. With most of these sorts of things, the "donations" are really just gifts. I'm not sure what legal limits there are to how the family uses the money.
