After watching Thursday’s episode of “30 Rock” (called ‘Double-Edged Sword’), it reminded me of to Coach Sloan’s resignation.
First let me quickly summarize the episode. Liz & Carol (pilot & Liz’s boyfriend) were set fly together (Liz as a passenger & Carol piloting) but there was trouble before dispatching for take-off. Carol announced that the flight will be delayed for “another half-hour.” As passengers grew impatient, Liz approached Carol to inquire what the delay was, only to discover that this was just a typical airline ploy. Now knowing that she & her fellow passengers (or “cattle”) were being toyed with, Liz became to question her boyfriend’s authority/ability to do his job, in-front of his peers. Cutting to the chase, they begin to criticize each other on their jobs & relationship to which someone shouts, “How are you two dating? You’re too similar!” A gun gets pulled (btw, this is a sitcom) & where then, they realized they should not be together. This was not a healthy relationship. Liz & Carol were just too stubborn, which created a resentment towards one another.
This what I believed happened to Coach Sloan & Deron Williams. Both competitors wanted to win but one, a HOF coach, was set in his methods/system & the other, wanted to “update” what deemed stale. I think that the loss against Chicago was “the gun” being pulled out on him, as he realized he had lost control of this era of players.
It’s been well documented that Coach Sloan had heated arguments with players (from All-Stars to bench warmers) but at this stage of his life/career, he probably felt it was time to move on. I’m not saying that he quit on the team but trying to elaborate that Coach knew what’s best for the team/organization, is that he step down. Sacrifice today, for the benefit of tomorrow.
As for my take on Deron, he is partially to blame but I cannot “Boo” the guy. Let’s not add fuel to the fire in trying to push him away (to re-signing). Let’s see how far he can take us these 2 years. His decision then, will indicate if his actions were about winning a NBA title for our beloved Utah Jazz.
For the record, I've been the biggest supported of Coach Sloan (fan since '90) & was calling people fools for wanting him fired but now I feel lucky that we retained Coach Corbin (who's been high on GM's list as of late).
