Dumb pig cops getting smarter?

Serious question.

What police orders am I required to follow by law and what ones am I not required to follow. I am not completely sure on this.

This is one reason why I always advocate for protocols that are taught in school that spell out exactly what the cops will do in a given situation and what I am required to do when that happens. Then for the police to be very clear about what is an order they have the legal right to make, what is a request, and what is an emergency command that needs to be followed immediately or could result in the use of physical force against me.

I do know that it is not at all uncommon for the police to issue "orders" that we citizens are not obligated to follow, that they have no legal authority to make or enforce. It really clouds things in situations like this.

Then you've got people saying she didn't follow the police officers orders. So? Was she required to? The police are not our parents. They are not our commanding officers. It really needs to be made clear what is a legal order and what is a cop bossing people around because he likes bossing people around and being a bully.
I like this post alot.

I mean, if I get pulled over and the cop asks to search my vehicle but I have not done anything wrong can I tell him no? Or does he have the right to search my vehicle other than my trunk or a locked glove box? Or can he search whatever he wants whenever he wants?
I have no idea and hear allot of differing opinions on the subject

And the police officer might make it seem like they aren't asking, or that the question is just a test and if you refuse then you must be guilty of something.

I don't drive around with contraband in my car but I will never consent to a search. I feel very strongly that no one should ever consent to a search. Now, if I say "I don't consent to searches" and the cop tells me to get out of my car, get on the ground and he starts searching my car I get out, lie on the ground and maybe at most reiterate that I'm not consenting to any of this. Never would I try to physically stop a police officer from doing whatever it was they insisted on doing (unless they were hurting my kid or something), but I would make it clear that I did not consent.

Also, if I get pulled over for speeding or whatnot I'll chitchat with the officer a bit if the officer wants to chitchat, but when he starts asking me where I'm going or anything like that I will politely decline to answer the question with a brief explanation that my private affairs are private.

It's a great question. I think it's at the heart of the reason that I see this so differently from some of the others here who think the officer's actions were justified.

well, and so do a lot of black folk who have some historical basis for feeling mistreated. I looked around on the black community types in the webz, and found some citing a lot of history.

Second thoughts, maybe it was good judgment to let the cop go rather than try the case in the press. And maybe black dude Sotomayor had a point too. Maybe a fair number of black folks would do what it takes to make peace rather than fight everything out in high rhetoric and demonstrations and cultivating resentments. I hope so.

My general idea of the line the police have to mark is this. You don't lose your temper, if the cop has lost his. You leave if asked, gladly. You don't come back either. Relevant to this situation, where the stated purpose was to end a party complained of as trespass or not approved by the owners, it is reasonable if they ask you leave. If they want you to sit down or ask some questions, they need some kind of reason. Disorderly conduct, running away, and confronting the police are "reasons" only so far as they may relate to the complaint they are acting on. For example, if no one complained about drugs, it would not "fly" for them to line up everybody and do a full body search for drug packets hidden in private places. If you have drugs. and they ask you to leave, leave in a calm manner, for sure.

there are some definite legal precedents regarding arrests, searches, detainment, and the specific things they can ask you do do. I believe sometimes in the name of public order, the police push their limits. Would make a good thread by itself.

I just wish there wasn't a gray area here. I want to know when I'm being ordered to do something and when I'm being asked. I want to know when I'm pulled over if I should get my "papers" ready of if I should turn off the engine, put my hands on the wheel and sit still. I just want to know what I need to do in order to avoid causing or furthering some sort of confrontation. I don't want a confrontation with police. Never ever ever. I don't want to wonder if I'm threatening them in some way I'm not aware of. I just want them to do what they have to do and deal with me as they must in a way that is clear and professional, that doesn't result in them shooting me dead. If I'm not guilty I want to be harassed and detained as little as possible...well, not at all really, but I'll take as little as possible.

I would guess that well above 99% of the time this is how it goes. We only hear about the stops and calls that go bad. How many thousands are there that run smoothly for every bad one we hear about.

I guess you could take that the other way as well. How many other bad ones happen that we don't hear about. It's a tough topic to be sure.

Please stick to one fake persona at time. I mean is it fake Russian or fake ebonics or fake Russian ebonics? How are we supposed to know when you keep switching it?
