Granted the American guy was idiotic, but the Dutch coach's claim that the reason people play/watch American football is to insulate them from the international community was ALSO idiotic.

I think they are both just messing around with each other.

Though I think the Dutch guy is partially right. Football is marketed as being "American" more than any other sport. Baseball use to be like that before the influx of foreign players.

Basketball and Baseball now market themselves internationally. Football is kind of starting to do it in England, but nowhere near the level of the NBA or MLB. I don't think it's a stretch that the NFL's American popularity is boosted by the fact that it is so American.

I'm not sure why you think there aren't more opportunities, but you're wrong. America is never going to have a system like Europe does where we ship 13 year olds off to soccer schools so that they do nothing but soccer and a little bit of school. Perhaps it is actually other countries where there are less opportunities for sports. They have to be in clubs, that they pay for, to play sports...in America we typically have the opportunity to play most sports (but not all) in our schools, yet we're the ones with less opportunities? ********.

In CA, the competition is much more severe. If you aren't playing club volleyball, basketball, baseball or soccer, there's a very slim chance you will ever make your high school team (and I'm talking boys and girls). I won't speak to football because I have no experience in that area as a player, coach or official. Didn't used to be that way when I was growing up, but it's become the case now. Kids can play AYSO soccer, city basketball and volleyball, but to take it to the next level, they're going to have to go club/travel team, play virtually year round and the parents will be forking out a ton of money.
