Elijah Millsap Lost Trust from Coaching Staff?

Ok, after seeing the excerpt, I have less respect for Pelton. If he's going to say something about "losing trust", he should back it up with something. Purely his opinion. On the one hand he mentions how good Millsap ranked defensively and then as an example? of the lost trust he cites undisciplined play and too many fouls on the defensive end? Sorry, Mr. Pelton, maybe Millsap ranks so high because he IS aggressive. How does 4.8 foulls per 36 put the Jazz in the penalty early in quarters? He only plays 20 mins per game. So he commits 3 fouls during that time? Maybe a bit on the high end, but not critical.

This is about as bad a reporting piece as I've seen.

If you have a quote from a coach or Dennis Lindsey, please provide it, Mr. Pelton. Otherwise just STFU and don't try to pass off your personal opinion as insider info. Millsap may be competing with a few others for the last couple of roster spots, but he is by no means a "long shot," especially since he has a very good NBA skill; namely, the defensive ability to bother any SG in the league.

When someone says an organization is "losing trust" in a player, I automatically associate that with the player having continual off-court problems, like getting a DUI, staying out late every night and getting into trouble with the law, having a drug problem, etc. It would have been better to phrase it another way...such as: "Unless Millsap shows improvements in x, y and z, these limitations and weaknesses in his game may make it difficult for the Jazz organization to keep a roster spot available for him."
 
Exactly, akirac. And to make such a statement as Pelton did should require some kind of backup. Nothing he said about Millsap being good defensively, but a liability offensively warrants a conclusion of "losing trust." Many teams have defensive stoppers. If anything, I think the roster composition of the Jazz should make Millsap a strong contender to make the team. Hayward, IMO, is an underrated defender, but none of the other wings have reputations for being good defenders. On a night when Harden, Thompson or any other SG is getting into a rhythm, I think Quin could/should turn to Millsap and tell him to get in there, get in their face and disrupt their shooting - even if commits 3-4 fouls in the process.

Just calm down a little ok? I think he just says but doesnt mean it the way it say? Pelton a good guy for NBA.

He did back it up, was saying Millsap didn't prove himself on the offensive end and turned the ball over a lot. Generally turning the ball over makes a coach trust you less to do things with the ball. The article is fine. He didn't try to pass anything along as inside information.

Also, it's not a "reporting" article, it's an analyst article. If anyone is to blame, it would be Larsen for taking out a very small exert without any context.
 
I remember hearing on the big show a week or so ago they interviewed DL and QS and they both had very specific information regarding Millsap. DL actually said his advice to Eli was "don't get yourself cut", and then he followed up by saying Eli needs to quit trying to prove what he can do, listen to his coaches, and basically play more in the offense. I'm not saying I think he is going to be cut, or that the coaches aren't pleased with him, but I thought the interviews were interesting to say the least... Maybe Pelton is reading into it, thinking Eli isn't understanding his role, or the coach is sending him a message... I don't know

Pelton's comments make perfect since within the context of offensive execution. I don't think Snyder trust Millsap to do anything on offense. He turned it over at a pretty high rate and shot it terribly. I think Pelton may value the more steady Johnson over Millsap. (Also pretty sure Pelton really like Chris Johnson from a past article)

It's hard on Twitter. You try to share the quotes, but yeah, stuff is going to be lost.

But this is one example where I'll stand by how I did it. He used that sentence as a topic sentence of a paragraph, and it's not really minimized in the rest of Millsap's profile. In that sentence, he claims two things that, from what I have heard, are untrue. Furthermore, they're unsupported by the statistical evidence.

1. That Millsap "has lost the trust" of the Jazz's coaching staff.

Quin Snyder asserted the opposite today, when I asked about the exact quote from Pelton. "Totally false", he said. And quite frankly, why would he have? Now, I've heard the some talk privately about how it's difficult to play Millsap because he doesn't shoot, pass, or dribble well. But that, to me, says something very different than "lost the trust of", just that it's difficult to play him major minutes. I think that's true.

Statistically, it's not supported at all. Millsap played 25 minutes in the last game of the season. He didn't play in summer league because he's 28, and quite frankly, had earned the right not to. I don't see any evidence for the assertion that "he's lost the trust of the coaching staff."

2. That he's "a long shot" to make the roster.

Again, that seems untrue. Read how Dennis Lindsey talks about him in July:

Elijah Millsap’s unique defensive ability to blow up screens. And as Coach [Jerry] Sloan said — we were, we’ve talked a lot about Elijah relative to some other defensive wings, and Coach Sloan appropriately said this. It was r–just really well stated. He said, “Look, there’s guys that are defenders, and then there’s guys that scare people when they’re defending.” And that list is much smaller.

So Elijah’s an exceptional defender, but there’s also a force and a power and an energy and a mindset where you put him out there and say, “Sic him,” he does — we were, you know, per 100 possessions, we, when Elijah’s out there, we were plus-5…The returns were good. The d–returns were surprising, and we need to know more going forward.

That sounds very, very, unlike a quote about someone who will be cut. I don't know everything, but I just can't see it. Saying otherwise, that he's very likely to be cut, is very notable. I noted it.

Neither of those two points is changed by the statistical profile of Millsap, so I thought it was fair to quote the sentence.

Little Sap had a hole in his game was is the offensive side of the ball. I would think that playing in Summer League would help him improve that. Plus his K is nonguaranteed so he might be expendable.

Thanks for the follow up. Really strange and poor choice of words by Pelton. As the beginning of a topic sentence, I was expecting to find specifics about that "lost trust." Was he ignoring the coaches? Running the wrong plays? Abusing puppies? Pelton only cited his offensive woes and praised and then criticized his defense.
 
Andy Larsen comes off as a hack more often than not.

Move along. Another basement blogger trying to be big time.
