So I don't know if any of you listen to ESPN's radio app, but I have been for awhile. I purchased the app on the iTunes store about 2 years ago for $2.99. Recently I saw an notice in the application that as of August 1, 2012, my current application will no longer be functional, and that I would need to upgrade to ESPN's new Radio Application. I assumed that since I had already purchased the ESPN radio app, that this "upgrade" would be free of charge. Come to find out, while some features of the application are free (most notably listening to podcasts offline), in order to continue listening to live streams of ESPN radio (along with other features), I would have to purchase the "upgraded" application for $5.
Essential, I purchased the right to listen to ESPN radio on my phone two years ago and now I have to purchase it again for even more money than before. How is this ethical? What is their strategy here? I do realize that I'm complaining about only $5. But this is one of those situations where it truly is the principle of the matter.
Reading online it sounds like ESPN has gotten a lot of complaints and questions, and the boiler-plate email they are sending back reads:
The newest version of the ESPN Radio application is free to download and provides the ability to download podcasts and listen off-line. You are able to experience the full ESPN Radio application free for the first fourteen days. After your 14 day trial period ends, there is a $4.99 one-time fee to continue listening to LIVE streams and to use the new “My Stations” feature based on your sport preferences. If you choose not to pay $4.99 at the end of your trial, ALL ESPN podcasts and SportsCenter updates will continue to be available for free.
This response is ridiculous. You are still stealing from those who purchased the original application to be able to listen to LIVE ESPN radio on the go because you are DISABLING the original application. How stupid does ESPN think we are?
