What's new

evaluating preseason

The preseason has gone just how I hope the regular season will go...

We are in most of the Games but don't win and we only beat the Warriors!!!

Jazz start slow and rough. As the season progresses and the team gets healthy, no more scrubs, chemistry grows and the guys start to excel you will see the Jazz winning more games towards the end of the season.

How much time do you want Evans getting. I'd play him as a big over Williams and Brickins.

Marvin's shooting gives him the edge over Evans, imo
I think the emergence of Rudy means Evans should be back to scrap minutes.
Beeno shouldn't even be with the team. But maybe he serves as a haunting reminder to our youth of what happens when you settle.

Preseason was fun to watch to observe youngster's performances.

*The results and weird rotation of Corbin were not surprising at all. (Kanter's reduced min, Gobert's appearence till the last match, Evans' starting role etc)
*Spacing will be the problem for the team. We will live still hard time against the team who knows how to clog the paint. Mediocre shooting ability from behind the arc will hunt us.
*PnR or Pnp of both wings seem more efficient than high block. Hayward's and Jefferson's assists numbers will be the key for us.
*The defense still not the best part but most definitely we are gonna be good at it. Favors' min, ability to avoid the fouls is obligation for this area. Hayward and Jefferson must be better while defending PnR against the screens.
*It's obvious we are lack of qualified PG so offense seemed mediocre at best. Hayward's aggressiveness and improved midrange jumpers will help too much and become main factor of our big's performances. His basketball iq and play of point forward contributes directly to the team.
*Kanter's gonna need some time to perform well as we've been all waiting. His strenght, boxing out, post up defense and rotation all were mediocre. On offense; his dribbling, midrange jumpers, offensive boards all fun to watch. Yet, he's gotta learn how to pass against the double team.
*Favors' boards, blocks, surprisingly assists, cover of Kanter's back on the weakside all made us happy. Still, his offense depends on PnR, put backs after o-boards and going to the free throw line. He needs to be consistent, avoid early fouls and gotta improve his face up game. Whenever he tries to post up like Kanter or Big Al, it's miss or TO.
*Jefferson's made me optimistic that he still has got something in the tank. Good cuts after screens, consistent midrange jumpers, perfect passing ability and leadership on the court.
*Lucas is the surprise rabbit coming out of the hat. He can make you either happy or cry in the same min. His passing and court vision is average at best but once he makes the shots behind the arc, spacing becomes much better for Kanter's post up game or Hayward's cut to the rim.
*Gobert's name means "potential". He's got so long way to go but seems quick learner, perfect rebounder and blocker. Corbin needs to find some min for him to get experience and use his motor and speedy fett on PnR with the second unit.
*Burks is Burks and this is not either compliment or diatribe. Inconsistent shooting, questionable drives to the rim, easy To and all. Still he knows to how to be at FT line and will be the 1st option stepping on the court off the bench as a scorer.
*Biedrins knows he's gonna be out of the team after this year so he's just hanging out. Still, he knows how to defend and rebound in limited min. Sure, Gobert must be ahead of him in the rotation and he's gotta hold towel at the bench.
*Evans should be our victory cigar. Some beautiful dunks, blocks. He's gotta pray for his athletic ability and swear himself still for being garbage man.

Burks is taking chucking and turn over to a whole new level.

Hayward can not run an NBA offense. Enough with his 33% shooting performances.

Kanter has no confidence in the post. WTF?

JLIII is worse than Tinsley by a lot.

Gobert looks promising, but will get posterized a lot.

Richard Jefferson looks like the only player who understands where guys will be on offense.

How many turn overs will Corbin allow before going to a more screen and shoot heavy offense?

I couldn't agree more about Biedrins. I like the energy that Evans brings but if Gobert does as well and more then it's purely sentimental. I'd like to see Evans play 10 a game and be here for the next 5 years. Just a cool kid that is good mojo. You're probably right on Williams. I just don't feel that he fits and Evans does.

This sounds about right.

I've learned that Corbin still sucks and will not survive the year. We're going to have an absolutely horrible start to the season.. we're talking like 4-16 or 3-17 in our first 20 games.

Because he's younger and that's all that matters.

Burks is playing slot of his time with people like Cook. When it's Lucas, Evans, Gobert, Williams and Rush itll improve.

Kanter will get sorted out. Interested to see what Corbin does with his minutes.

Hayward is a shooter and this lapse in his shot is temporary.

Gobert getting dunked on is part of challenging shots. He will be dunking on people as well. I'll take this admission on Gobert over Brickins.

Good to see Jefferson playing well. Seems like a good character guy as well.

Corbin will change it up. Just wonder how soon. He needs to develop quickly or he won't be here.

Agreed on Tinsley over Lucas.

It is really hard to evaluate the team's performance because it was PRESEASON!!! The Jazz gave a lot of minutes to scrubs who are not going to be on the team. Our entire team is still learning their roles and how to play together. You are going to see a lot of times where the teams looks disjointed until everyone settles into their roles. Even then there are going to be ups and downs.

Nevertheless, I saw a lot of things I liked. The guys played hard. All three big guys had their moments and have their own flaws. Hayward showed improved rebounding and passing. Evans displayed a jumper before he was hurt. I saw improvement in Burke before he got hurt. Jefferson showed leadership and that he can help us off the bench. I think our bench will be better when we get Williams and Bush back. We saw that Alec Burks is better coming off the bench and having the ball in his hands. At times I saw the defensive potential but I also saw that we have a ways to go still.

The Jazz are going to struggle scoring and they will probably struggle down the stretch in close games. Our PG position is still the weakest like but eventually I think Trey will a decent starting PG. I am also hoping the TOs will come down once they play together and know each others tendencies. Do not know how mentally tough this group is but I saw some positive signs during preseason. Injuries will be a concern due to the lack of depth. Outside shooting is still pretty average. It was just nice to see "the future" playing and as a long time Jazz fan I am hopeful that the future is bright.

Wrong! But hey feel free to carry on with your over exaggerated posts and pretend it's me.

Did you know that getting old is the Tea Parties fault?

Hayward is a shooter and this lapse in his shot is temporary.

The kid couldn't take a sickly looking Steve Blake off the dribble!

You don't realize the difference between "shooter" and "playmaker"? Pretending Hayward will suddenly shoot consistently when a) he has never shown an ability to do so overall, and b) does not have the ability to do so in a play making role, is pretty far fetched.

Hayward needs to be used in a shooting role. I also like the inside post up attempts.

I think Hayward will work as a co-playmaker and not the playmaker if that makes sense. Right now he has more responsibility there than I think he needs.

But you referenced his shooting and I said it'll work itself out. Do you not realise that? Agreed on the posting up. When he has a SG on him he will have a height and weight advantage.

I don't know man, I thought 40% 3pt fg was a mark of a good shooter?

Hayward will play off the ball more when trey is back and comfortable. He shouldered an extra load when trey went down, and despite some hickups, has looked really good at spots. Health willing, he should settle into a nice niche.

Good point but I think the Jazz are trying to turn him into something he currently is not, so it's more than him shouldering extra burden atm. They talked a ton about him running offense before Trey went down.

Either way, he is not looking very good at creating, although his assists and foul shots paint a slightly better picture than what I'm seeing. But those turn overs are killing his efficiency.

Maybe you should give him a few games to figure things out (and thus bring down the turnovers)?

Hay needs a pick, but I like a lot of what I see. His strength in this role is his passing, and I think he'll get better at recognizing when he can draw fouls.

He does have a TO problem but that problem is team wide also. To many TOs.

Hopefully, the Jazz don't dump 12 million+ per year in his lap for his ability to "settle into a nice niche".

Maybe. A bad a:t ratio is to be expected from volume scoring 2's anyway. It's not my real concern. His 36.2% 2 point shooting is the real issue and he's not going to figure that out in a few games. He has to get up to a minimum of 42% to justify using him this way (and continue getting to the line 6.6 times per game, shooting about 80%). That would put him at a roughly 1 PPP on 2 point possessions (skewed higher for break away baskets and not accounting for assists and turnovers).

Bottom line is he is highly inefficient when initiating the offense. I want him used for his strengths which is coming off screens and shooting lights out. Too bad this offense can't get him much of that. JLIII can barely get the ball up the court.
