Explain the Monroe Love

He was playing at MSG for the Big East championship on national TV. Anybody who plays basketball would want to play in those games. It's the regular season games in the middle of the season that you find out about someone. He had a tendency to take some games off in those situations. Part of it could be maturity...only time will tell whether it is a fatal flaw or not. Not a risk I like taking if I don't have to. He's not talented enough to ignore some of those issues, IMO.

But thank you for confirming my theory of why Monroe is so popular on here...

You are also completely ignoring the fact that he had played each of the past 3 nights with heavy minutes. People who lack intensity dont play well on nights like those. I also dont mind guys who play well on the big stage.

Yeah, I wish I was excited about somebody. At least I won't be disappointed when my favorite player gets passed on by the Jazz.

It'll be interesting to see who in this fairly level draft becomes a stud.

If this guy has so much passion, and if he has all of this talent and elite size (for the NCAA), why is it that he didn't dominate?

I am not totally anti Monroe, and while he is probably tall enough to play center, his lack of athleticism and softness does not make him ideal there. Passing is nice, but probably the fourth stat you look at for a center and PF. Either go for an all out center (Whiteside), make a trade to move up for Favors (see other threads), or you take the most talented player available which CLEARLY is one of the wings (George, Henry, Babbitt).

Even if that player doesn't fit as well as another that's on the board? I'm not a believer in talent being the lone piece of criteria to evaluate a prospect. If we were the Wizards? Yes, pick the BPA because they have holes everywhere. The Jazz? No, pick a player that fills weaknesses, fits a team's mentality and what they are trying to do, and improves the team as a whole. Yes, even if the player is a little less talented overall. Monroe being above and beyond more talented than any other realistic Jazz prospect in this draft is debatable regardless.

Just because Monroe (or any 'need big') is the best of the available 4's and 5's does not mean the Jazz should take one. At 9 you should be looking for a guy with star potential. If one isn't there, and the difference between a Monroe and a Babbitt isn't deemed that great, take Monroe. But we'll have plenty of guys at 9 better than the serviceable bigs in this draft destined for journeyman status in the NBA.

Personally, I think if there aren't any bigs that we really want at #9, we should either take the best wing available or trade down. It may be pretty deflating as a Jazz fan, since so much anticipation has been riding on this lotto pick. But perhaps it might be better for the Jazz to try and trade for multiple mid to late first round draft picks if they cannot trade up and nothing is there at #9 that they really want. Perhaps we could get a serviceable wing and backup PG?

Of course, I'm not sure how we'd ever wind up with 2 draft picks for this not so hot #9 pick. Not unless we somehow package it up with something.

Anyway, I'm eager for the draft to come. However, I'm not really expecting much good to come out of it for the Jazz. The more and more I read the more average this pick appears to me. We could definitely use an above average draft with the soon to be loss of Boozer.

I hope that's not how he goes to the hole normally, 'cause that was really weak.

EDIT:

Nice stroke, though. Out to NBA three range. Seems a bit slow though, but that's fine for 6-11.

Nice find. Thanks for the posting!

He does have a nice jumpshot. Even out to the 3 point arc, which I'm not sure how often he'll be asked to do in a Jazz uni. However, he didn't once make a back to the basket move. I would much rather see his post game (even if it isn't all out contact) than see him shoot uncontested 3's and layups. Don't teams usually require bigs to at least post up a little bit in these pre-draft workouts? I just don't see many teams checking Favors' or Cousins' 3 point shooting ability instead of their postup games.

I like that Sacto posts their work outs. Monroe looks exhausted - he can barely elevate and can even barely keep his feet under him and keep his balance. He can't even really run here. He's kind of duck-footed when he runs also. He looks like an injury waiting to happen. Nice shooting stroke though.

I took it as the heart was there, but the legs weren't. At least that's what I hope. Flying across the country and doing workouts constantly is draining. Jet lag is a real thing.

And he did do a few post moves. At least the youtube vid showed a couple. Nothing stuck out though. Didn't show the off hand except on a couple fast break dunks, something easy to do when you're 6'11".
