Exum extension

With Hill supposedly demanding the max this summer, what do we do with Exum? So many times over the years the Jazz FO have looked passive and let other teams dictate the value of our players. Should they try to get ahead of the curve and get Exum to sign an extension this summer? I obviously have no idea what he or his agent wants, but chances are that he hill never be the player either he or we hoped he would be. Would he accept 4/50 this summer? That would really be lifechanging money that would set him up for life. If he busts, the joke is us on, but if he actually improves and becomes a solid starter, we get a good player on a great contract, which is what we really need if we want to keep this team together over the next 3-5 years.

Excellent point. I agree that if possible we should be proactive in this regard regardless of whether Hill stays or goes.

Why on Earth would Exum extend if he is just now showing promise?

If the NBA is in such a state that every rookie who has had one (?) 20+ point game over nearly three full years (yeah, I know he`s been injured) of playing feels entitled to a max extension, then he should obviously just tell us to max him or **** off. If he plays like last night for the rest of the year, he`ll probably take his chances. If not, he`d be wise to consider his options.

It's pretty rare to see an extension after the 3rd year that isn't near the max. Let's rewind to a year before Dante, these are the players that extended and are maxed or close to it: Schroeder, McCollum, Gobert, Adams, Oladipo

We did do this with Alec Burks, so it`s not unheard of at all.

There's less need to extend Exum when we can simply match any offer in free agency. The only benefit would be for DL to lock Exum into a lengthy contract (as opposed to letting another team dictate the years of a contract).

Here are the extension predictions from Keith Smith, a writer for RealGM.

5. Dante Exum – Utah Jazz: Exum is another member of the class who has missed significant time with injury. He tore his ACL and missed the entire 2015-16 season. This year he’s come back and played mostly backup minutes behind George Hill. An extension for Exum is likely tied to Hill’s free agency this summer. If Hill stays in Utah, are the Jazz going to commit to Exum on a big contract?

Extension Prediction: No Extension if Hill re-signs with Utah. Four years/$64 million if Hill leaves. It all depends on Hill. Utah isn’t going to commit big to a backup point guard when they can get one elsewhere for much cheaper. If Hill leaves, the Jazz will likely keep Exum around and install him as the starter moving forward, as they have other pressing free agency concerns this summer as well.

23. Rodney Hood – Utah Jazz: Hood has become one of the steals of the 2014 Draft. He’s a solid scorer who can score inside and outside and make plays off the dribble. He’s had some injury issues this year, which has held back his development as a playmaker, after he showed signs of improvement in that area last season

Extension Prediction: Four years/$80 million. Unlike Exum, whose future is tied to Hill to some extent, Hood is a guy the Jazz want to retain at almost any cost. After extending Rudy Gobert, Utah will attempt to do the same with Hood, especially as insurance if Gordon Hayward leaves this summer.
