Exum needs to play over Mack

I've shifted 100% from development mode to win mode. I was patient for a number of years content to emphasize player development over winning, with an eye to the long-term. However, I am no longer patient. As far as I am concerned, we have a good and improving core to work with consisting of Hayward, Hill, and Gobert (I'm increasingly skeptical whether Favors is part of this owing to his proneness to injury and am not decided on Hood given his ongoing inconsistency). We can build around and win with this core. If Exum is part of it, all the better. But, frankly, I can live with it if he turns out not to be part of the core moving forward. I just want to win, and for now, I'll give Snyder the benefit of the doubt, as long as we win. I reserve the right, however, to change my mind if we are not winning at the rate I would like (e.g., high 40's or 50's and making playoffs).

As long as the Jazz keep winning and avoid a bad stretch, Exum is screwed. Really doesn't matter how Mack plays. Jazz win, Quin keeps Exum on the bench. Simple as that.

Why would you think that Exum is not likely to be part of the core? I think the real frustration in this thread is that it is quite obvious that Exum's potential ceiling is vastly higher than Mack's. Mack is a decent backup, Dante could become an allstar. No guarantees, but Mack has zero chance of becoming an AS some day and Dante does.

Agreed. Kid is being pushed by Quinn right now, and he needs to prove that he belongs.

Mack's play and numbers are irrelevant. Exum has a higher standard to live up to, and Quinn is simply removing Dante's plate from in front of him.

It will be interesting to see how he responds when he is put in again.

I don't believe I said that Exum is not likely to become part of the core. My point is that IF he turns out not to be part of the core, I'm ok with that, assuming the core we have assembled (Hayward, Hill, Gobert, probably Favors and possibly Hood) is sufficient to create a winning, contending team.

I hope Exum is as good as everyone thinks he can be, but I'm to the point, after enduring years of losing and emphasizing player development, I prioritize winning over his development (if I had to choose, although I don't necessarily believe they are mutually exclusive).

The loudest voices praising Q when he was hired by the jazz (not just league-wide but internationally) cited his ability to develop talent. It seems that some people here (an indurrrnet message board) believe he's completely lost touch with this skillset.

To the folks that are pimping Dante for his defense: you're not watching carefully. He's officially being vastly overrated as a defender at this point. On top of this, it's clear that our half-court offense is worse when he's in (relative to our other options). He's definitely useful on the break, but since we aren't a running team, this use value is limited by fit.

Dante needs to find some time somewhere in the rotation, but I think it's fair to say he isn't earning that right now.

It'll be interesting to see if he DNPs on the second half of a back-to-back. That would raise my eyebrows even though I understand why he's been on the pine recently.

Something we need to consider - if he's not playing and he's out of the rotation, maybe he'll be better served to spend some time in the D-League. The team is now in SLC and it will be much easier to keep an eye on him. It's much better for him to play now rather than ride the pine for the Jazz...

Yeah, but how often is the timing perfect where the Stars are playing a home game while Utah is in town not playing a home game? I doubt the Jazz really want to travel without Exum.

He needs to find a way to play in lineups that are really good offensively (aka lineups with George and Hayward). I would get why Quin is reluctant to do it though. George/Hayward lineups are the most deadly and it would be kind of risky to handicap it when we are currently relying on those lineups to build leads.

We are having a stretch with a lot of home games in December. I bet they can synchronize the schedule to make it work.
