Boozer was under contract on a very cheap rookie deal and asked for more given his production. Cleveland could have kept him on his deal without giving him a dime more. Instead, they (or so the owner thought) had a gentleman's agreement to make Boozer a FA and write up a new contract. Instead, Carlos bolted.

Cleveland had no recourse as negotiating a new deal before becoming a FA was prohibited.
