As crazy as a trade this was, it was actually not a bad move by the Knicks, and that saying something because all they have done in the last 30 years was make bad moves. As hard as it was for them to move Porzingis, he didn't want to be there. and they are and have been in desperate mode for a quality rebuild, because all they do is fail one rebuild after another with what seems to be, really bad contracts. This trade they took the most difficult but best route. They traded away their superstar who didn't wan't to be there and 2 players that are not significant to their win shares (see standings) and their guaranteed contracts totaling $40,219,099 in exchange for a good future point guard in Dennis Smith Jr, which they will keep (with future trade value) as well as 2 expiring contracts in Wesley Mathews and DeAndre Jordan totaling $41,519,714 that will be off of the books by the offseason allowing them to go after free agets and not financially strap their team. They dug themselves out of a 4 year financial rut in one transaction.
