1st quarter was not amazing. That's why he got pulled early. He started off with the plays that drive Hardy crazy. Driving into the trees without looking around. 1st was a turnover and 2nd was getting blocked. He had some better offense after that but combined with poor defense and rotations he was coming out early.

Made 2 free throws
Assist to Collins

6 points (on 2-3 from the field, 1-1 from 3, and 2-2 from the line), 4 assists, and one turnover.

If he does that every quarter then he finishes with 24 points (on amazing efficiency), 16 assists and 4 turnovers. I will take that all day every day.


He came out when he always comes out. (About 4 minutes left in the first).

If Hardy did take him out early after he made early mistakes and then played great afterwards (shot 100% and set up his teammates over and over and over) just to play Clarkson hella minutes while he struggled way more then that is strange.

Also, we called a timeout when we challenged the Collins block. Can you make substitutions during a timeout? Seems like that jump ball was kind of crucial. I would want Kessler to handle the jump ball. Maybe you can't do a substitution during a timeout in which you are doing a challenge though. Idk.

Its actually a double no. You cannot sub during "official timeouts" which includes replays, even if you need a team timeout to challenge. And even if there is a legal stoppage to sub, you cannot use a subbed in player for a team jump ball (or sub out a player who is designated to take a jump ball).

There are exceptions but only for seriously injured or bleeding players.

Might be the worst coaching performance of Will Hardy’s career to date.

I think that still goes to last years game in Philly where Embiid went crazy but he refused to put Walker in even though he played very well when in.

Talk about entitled. I'm not Olynyk's #1 fan but Keyonte has proved nothing in the NBA and has earned zero right to display that kind of body language during a tight game. Get his *** off the rotation until he grows up. The more we allow this ****, the worse it's gonna get in the future when his role grows.

Lauri has like 149 plays every game where they look him off when he's asking for the ball but you don't see him ****ing sulking.

FWIW before he responds and says "but his defense though" I went watched the first quarter game highlights while sexton was in again. Maxey scored on dunn. Maxey scored on collins. Maxey scored on dunn. Bad pass by dunn leading to a 3 on 1 sixers break with sexton the only one back who makes an amazing contest on tobias harris (harris makes a tough shot over sexton). Then Maxey hit a 3 from about 8 feet beyond the 3 point line over sexton (after he was already on fire and in rythm at this point) The highlight doesn't show every play however but those are the ones they do show.

Plus, defense? we talking about defense?
Kessler and Dunn are probably the 2 best defenders on the entire team and they literally played the least minutes of anyone who played. Both were positives in plus/minus (kessler 2nd on the team and dunn 3rd.) Our next best defender might be ochai. He got the 3rd least minutes (understandably). THT and Hendrix would seem to be good defenders on paper and didn't play. So defense doesn't really seem to be all that important anyway but Sexton was fine on defense in the first quarter.

I don't think this Hardy/Sexton situation ends well. I'm not sure I have ever seen a situation like this where a player plays so well yet the coach continues to limit his minutes for inferior players. Hell it took a rash of injuries before Hardy was basically forced to start Sexton and he has played so well that there is no way he could justify bringing him back off the bench but he is clearly going out of his way to limit his minutes. At some point animosity is going to start to build for Sexton and his management team who have to be scratching their heads at the minutes distribution right now.

Sexton is free to ask for a trade (he might be moved anyway of course). However, if he thinks someone will give him a starting role with plenty of on-ball responsibility like he has with the Jazz, he's in for a very nasty surprise. Most likely he'd be going straight to the bench.

That's why I said recently that Collin is pretty much in an ideal situation in Utah. If he doesn't see it, he's dumb.

His minutes get cut when he goes out of control. We've been seeing more and more of the old Sexton cropping up – crazy drives into the trees, getting blocked over and over and over again. And he still can't guard anyone even when he tries.

Sexton can choose to play within himself. We've seen it. Not sure it's sustainable in the long run, but if he wants to prolong his NBA career and become known as a starter level guy instead of a manic microwave scorer off the bench, he has to do it.

Clarkson is averaging the second most minutes in his career this season. (30.1) Last year was the most minutes per game of his career.
Career low field goal percentage (41%) and career low 3 point percentage (29%). second worst turnovers per game (last year was his worst) at 2.8. His rebounds are worse than his career average. His steals are down (second lowest of his career. Last year was his lowest.)
His assists are a career high though at 4.9
You could make the case that this is the worst year of his career and is getting the second most minutes per game in his career.

Then you have sexton.
His two years with the jazz are best years of his career and by far his career lowest minutes per game (24 last year and 24 this year)
This season career high in points per 36 (26). Career high in assists per 36 (6.6 even high than clarksons career high assists per 36 this year at 5.9). Second most efficient season of his career (last year was his most efficient) shooting 49% from the field, 38% from 3 and 88% from the line. second best rebounding season of his career. Tied for best steals season of his career. Second lowest turnovers of his career. career high in blocks.
He is basically doing everything great and only seems to be getting better. You could easily argue this is the best year of his career. He is young. A gym rat. A film rat. Coachable. Good contract. Hard worker. Just entering his prime years. On a long term cheap contract throughout his prime years.

Might be time to increase sextons minutes and decrease clarksons.
