We're already at essentially 13 players and have no major minutes available for anyone. Seriously, what FA is going to want to sign with us when we tell him he's only around as injury insurance? The other thing is that KOC does not want to use up salary space for next season. I'm sure there have been a few offers for Jefferson: expirings always have value. But, again, why would we want to take on salary for next season or beyond? I'm only in favor of that if a deal returns a starter or legit 6th man (like we got with Marvin).
NO one that is left is of much interest. I've said this before, but Utah might be better off just letting AJ's contract expire and heading into the next offseason with up to $20M in salary space. Few teams are able to absorb Al's contract so they'd likely have to give us players in return: 1) contenders aren't going to give up anything of value; 2) non-playoff teams will generally want to dump big contracts and won't want to give up high draft picks.
Next year we pick up a young PG to develop and a tough, defensive center. We'll have more than the MLE to spend, which gives us an edge over many teams and we'll probably have 2 first-round draft picks. Two picks (and a 2nd) + 1-2 FA's to replace Jefferson, Watson and Tinsley. And perhaps Millsap and/or Marvin depending on how contract talks go - or if Marvin wants to opt in (which I think is almost a certainty).
