I went 5-5 but I could it could easily end up being 4-6 or 3-7. That is a really tough opening stretch of the season.

First 14 iirc are pretty tough. Last year it looked nasty too… and we went 10-3. If we are 5-5 look out…

Yeah, but if we dont get the pick, we will get our pick next year. At some point we are giving a pick to OKC, might as well get it out of the way.

Furthermore, we could probably use a rookie 2 years from now more than we will next year.
I think they lean towards being competitive unless we have injuries or get off to a horrible start. The only reason I think we might end up keeping the pick is 14 teams in the conference will be trying and Portland isn’t awful… the west is gonna be tough. If we do tank I’d expect to get to like 6/7th best odds… so a solid shot at a top 4 pick.

Olynyk and Clarkson are potential trade candidates this year. If we're not tracking to be a top-7 team, I think there is a chance the Jazz move a few guys and pull a U-turn. This year's draft isn't as deep as last year's, but there's some talent in it.

Next 4 are Magic, Wolves, Bulls and Pacers, so it does get a little easier. That 10-3 start was wild...I was so conflicted, I wanted us to tank but they were so fun to watch and fought so hard that it was impossible to root for them to lose.

Tanking this season would mean that giving Lauri a gigantic long term deal wouldn't make any sense anymore. A move like that would push the contending window even farther into the future, effectively separating Markkanen's timeline from the team's. On his new contract, Lauri would be such an investment that keeping him on the roster while going through consecutive 26-56 seasons and waiting for the youngins to "develop" would be insane. Just a horrible waste of a major asset that's losing value each year as Lauri approaches 30.

If DA doesn't really believe in this iteration of the team (and I can't blame him if he doesn't), he should trade Lauri ASAP. At least that would be logical.

What a bunch of nonsense. So called tanking this year does nothing to extend our window into the future. In fact it probably does the opposite because it would mean we get all the younger players a bunch of experience and get a better idea of the upside of them. It would also mean that we are adding a top 5 pick so you get an overall talent boost. Now if you don't want to have a contending window at all then you make a bunch of stupid win now moves for older guys like you and a lot of this board wanted to do with Jrue.

Yeah, let's draft another Taylor Hendricks that makes 4 years to be a NBA player then wonder why we can't win games as we waste a special talent's athletic prime. Genius.

When you have a chance to grab a high-end talent in the draft, normally you should do it. The team is the same next year without additional young talent if they don't. Right now, the Jazz aren't contending. They're a 7 - 11 seed in the West. To become a contender, they need their young talent to hit, and they need to swing a big trade to net an All Star-level player.

Or just be really good this year, sign Klay Thompson, and trade for someone
