What's new

Following potential 2012 draftees

How good of a defender is he? Would he automatically guard the best wing player, or just good enough to not get owned by average players?

He's got very high bbIQ and was the best athlete for UK this year. He, at times, would guard the opposing teams point, sg, sf, or pf. He was considered 2nd best guard/wing defender on the team to MKG. I think he would at least hold his own .. but wouldn't call him a lockdown defender at the next level.

No, he got playing time. There are two reasons, imo. First, he's a senior .. Second, he doesn't have the assassin mentality. He defers to his teammates more than Barnes. This makes Barnes more valuable because you want your good shooters .. well .. shooting the ball. In the last 20 games of the season, DMIller shot almost 10% better from 3 than Barnes, but he's still too passive on defense. NOT lazy, just less confident/too unselfish.

Could it be argued that he did that against lesser opponents (i.e., subs, rather than starters)?

Nope. He played almost 30 minutes per game. What could be said, though, is that Barnes was always more keyed on by opposing defenses .. even though every team UK played had a scouting report that said you could not leave Lamb or Miller to shoot the ball. No question, though, that Barnes got far more attention.

Just noticed my post count. Just wanted to say ..

Cyrone.

Edit: Oops. Now that my post count has changed, this makes no sense.

Well, Barnes can't create his own shot. So what you've got is a spot up shooter that's really confident. Who doesn't play much defense.
Miller is much less confident but still hits his shots at the same percentage. AND he plays defense. Seems like more of a complete player. + you also get to gamble on Marshall being the Jazz' PG of the future.

Are we drafting Barnes to be the #1 option? Or do we just need a shooter? In the Jazz offense I think Miller would be great.

- Barnes does play better defense than most give him credit for, but still inferior to average NBA wings, imo.
- Barnes would definitely not be being drafted as the #1 scoring option, but rather a floor-spreader, imo.

If PJ3 can play SF then I would take him over Barnes at 8. I doubt Barnes will still be their at 8. I just think Barnes is one-dimensional and his lack of passing and his average dribbling skills bother me. The only way the Jazz gets Darius Miller in the second round is if SA passes on him which I doubt they do. He seems like a SA type player. PKM who is the better pro prospect Miller or Lamb?

I'd take Miller over Lamb. Lamb can score, but is below-average athletically. Lamb does have high bbIQ, is a very good bb player, but too limited otherwise.

If it was anybody else on any other team where you could say that he's the "best defender, best athlete, best shooter" and all that stuff, and he was still a 6th man during his senior year, you would say that there's something wrong with him.

In fairness I said he was the;
"2nd best guard/wing defender to MKG"
"best athlete on the team"
Never said he was the best shooter on the team, but I'd say it was DLamb #1 and DMiller/Wiltjer #2a/b.

any discussion of DMiller, Crowder, Machado, or JJenkins is likely to make me slightly ill... I think at least 2 of those guys will be solid rotational players in the league + I'm still convinced there were second-round picks for Howard and Miles (and maybe Bell) but KOC was playing it conservative because of injury risk (ironic that these jazz players were the exact players to go down with injury).
