I like Vonleh a lot, but he's a big gamble because he needs a lot of work on his game, more than Gordon even. So I'd get him on the hopes that he'll work hard to develop his game (bout all you can do).

But yeah, in watching IU this year he was fairly passive most of the time and the team didn't really make an effort to get him the ball much. Probably a combination of his low skill level and playing with Yogi the chucker.

The cool thing is that he's not a tweener at all imo.

Yeah, IU was one of the worst teams I have watched all year whenever I tuned in to see what Vonleh was about. I remember one game where everyone on the court looked visibly confused as to what the hell they were suppose to do to the point where it was comical.

Millsap is a tweener too, but no one gave him the mindset that he should try to become a SF from day 1.

If Derrick Williams had a coach like Sloan who taught him his natural position first, then let him branch out into the jumpers and what not, he would have been a lot better served.

Bro, if the guy isn't physically big/physical enough to guard his position, he simply can't play that position - plain and simple.


Case in point - even your boi Aaron Gordon wants to play SF in the NBA.

Numbering positions is pretty dumb imo. You use the lineups that will be most beneficial in your attempt to win each and every game and you matchup people accordingly. These would and should fluctuate.

Derrick Williams can't guard PFs in most NBA lineups thrown at him - making him pretty redundant playing that position. Not Blake, not Love, not Aldridge, not even Favors or Kanter.


He can try to guard may be handful of players playing the stretch 4 like Marvin Williams or Carmelo?

Yeah, we all know that's the weakness in his game, but if he's one of the people that gives you the best chance to win he should see the floor. I think NBA guys know this and he's just not good enough at this point to get much time. He really needs some shooting ability to get on the court.

Yeah he's got to make the opposing team change their lineup to guard him - he's just not that good offensively to be able to do that. Moreover, teams like Clippers, Minny, Portland - they're never gonna take out Blake, Love and Aldridge.


So if Derrick Williams is your guy and you have to keep taking him out of your lineup - well that just sux.


I suspect Aaron Gordon knows this, hence he's trying to pick up SF skills this season with Arizona with the hope of playing the SF position full-time in the NBA. Cos unless he can bulk up physically like Blake and still be as explosive, he just won't be able to guard most PFs in the NBA.

That wasn't clear to me. Although at the time Davis was a concensus #1. Not as hyped as he is today though.

This... I was the first and most consistent voice on the 'warning' of Randle, but he will be a good player. No triple teams, TONS of tough play.. he'll be 'good.'

He'll see a double team on every postup due to the nature of the 2.9

Dude, shut up. You really have no idea what you are talking about.

Williams hasn't been able to play PF because every team he has gone to has already had an established super-star PF, so the coaches try to play him at SF, which is the dumbest move.

I can nearly guarantee Williams would be a pretty good PF if he went to the right team. It might be too late in his development to undo the bad habits that have already formed from trying to be a SF though.

You're looking at it all wrong imo. It's not a matter of getting 'SF skills' or 'PF skills', it's just a matter of becoming a better basketball player. If he, or anyone for that matter, is one of the players that gives the team the best chance to win when he's on the floor, then he will play. Doesn't matter how tall, heavy, or athletic he is. If he helps win, he'll play.

Furthermore, there are a lot of PF's who can't guard Love, Aldridge, or Griffin. They are All-Stars for a reason. These players are still considered PF's even though they have trouble guarding these 3 very unique players. Aaron Gordon would be a great defensive option vs. Griffin and Love though. He would probably have a tough time with Aldridge, but pretty much every PF does because of Aldridge's ridiculous height and length.

Don't give me the "Aaron Gordon is skinny" BS line. He is still 18 years old and has a great frame.
