I think there are certain skills you have to have... shooting and playmaking... and you can’t have guys that sieves on defense or that are basketball stupid. Big or small... athletic or not these are the things needed to win at the highest levels

Draft accordingly.

Lol just imagine trotting out a mid
80’s style NBA lineup into today’s game. It might sound like one of those cliche lame things, but the league is absolutely different and you can’t win that way now.

Imagine a team with one specialist 3 point shooter coming off the bench with no one else on the team taking more than one a game. That kind of thing doesn’t even compute anymore.

I haven't spent a ton of time on 2019 prospects, but from what I've seen and what I've heard it will be a horrible class compared to this one and pick #21 this year might indeed be better than pick #11 next year or at the very least they might be comparable. That's why I wouldn't hesitate to trade our next year's pick in order to move up and get whoever we love in this draft... be it Brown, Okobo, Knox... if DL thinks he can get a good starter from this draft somewhere in the teens and that trade becomes available I wouldn't hesitate to include Bradley or the 2019 pick in order to do it.

Just take the best jazz team and think about how it would match up in today’s nba.

Starting 5:
Stockton
Hornacek
Russell
Malone
Ostertag
Bench: eisley, Carr, Foster, shandon Anderson

Think about that team trying to defend the warriors using today’s nba rules. Stockton vs curry would be tough for Stock. Hornacek vs Klay would be a disaster for us. Russell trying to contain KD? The only favorable matchup we’d have would be Malone vs Green. But green would force Malone out of the paint and play in space, not his strength. They’d also be able to rotate Looney, McGee, and west onto Malone

Ostertag couldn’t even play in this series due to his lack of speed.

Bench wise we offer no matchup advantage. Carr and west would be a wash. While iggy and Livingston would run circles around us.

The rockets would do much of the same.

Hell, I’m not even sure how the 98 jazz match up against our 2018 jazz. Jingles and Mitchell would go crazy and Gobert could cheat off tag and help Favors on Malone.

It’s just a completely different game these days.

Do people really still think Bradley has a role on this team? At what? Rudy’s backup? He’s way too slow to play PF. If we can trade up and get a potential starter/star in this draft why not package him with the pick?

I thought the knock on Bradley was he was too slow. Well, the nba ain’t getting any slower. And with Rudy proving himself as the best DP in the league, what’s the point of keeping him as a backup?

I agree however, Curry can't hand check Stockton nor can they grab Malone. Malone was mugged because teams could pack it in due to the lack of 3 pt shots. The real problem would be KD. I am assuming Hornacek knee is healthy so I think with his movement he could hold his own on offense. Defensively, he would struggle against Thompson.

Benches there is not that big of a difference, except for Iggy. He would make it difficult on the Jazz. While I agree that the Warriors would beat the Jazz, trying to compare different eras you have to understand there would be some things the Warriors would struggle with too. Jazz had more than one guy who could hit a 3pt. shot, Stockton, Russell and Hornacek all were decent 3 pts. shooters.

Personally, I would have loved watching S&M without all the grabbing. I think they would have been even more unstoppable.

Our beloved 1990's Jazz would get destroyed in today's game. I love that team and always will, but the athleticism today is so much more intentional. The only guy in the entire NBA in the 90's who was built, trained and ready to guard MJ was his teammate Pippen. In today's game, you can't play on the wing if you can't guard like that. Ryan Anderson would have been an excellent 90's player, but the guy couldn't stay on the court against Golden State. Korver just got shut down by GS and he's a more modern version of Hornacek. I'm pretty sure Stockton and Malone were older in those 2 Bulls finals than LeBron is now.

It sucks to think about, but the game has evolved to a point that teams just 20 years ago are so vastly behind what is current. Whether good or bad, MJ revolutionized the game and his model has led to this super athlete iso type player instead of role player specialists. If you want a direct example, just see this Cleveland series. Everyone on GS is multidimensional. Almost everyone on Cleveland is a specialist. Sweep...

I don’t think the nba is going to slow down and become dominated again by big lumbering physical players. M

The rules have changed and so have the athletes. The game is much quicker today because you can no longer grab and handcheck out on the perimeter and yesterday’s best athletes are today’s average athletes.

It’s the same reason why the running game isn’t ever coming back to the nfl. Rules for what corners can do to receivers have changed making it much easier to pass and the athletes are just too damn good.

The present and future of the nba is all about speed and spacing.

This. I'd add in that great teams are also statistically much more efficient now. Let's face it, if you can hit 3's at 38% as a team, that's a lot better than hitting 2's at 50% as a team. It's not quite that simple (free throws, etc.) obviously but generally speaking it is. It's another reason we could use a dynamic scorer who can hit the 3, cough, Okobo.

I wasn't specifically talking about the Jazz championship team. Malone and Stockton were not at their physical best nor was Hornacek. Korver and Bell are past their prime. I have no doubt Malone would be unstoppable with the spacing provided by having 3 pt shooters.

As someone else pointed out, you need shooting and playmakers. I think the former can be taught. The latter not nearly as much. That's why if we can find a high iq, elite slasher/playmaker type (ideally who can play some 3), I think it's someone we need to draft. So long as their shot's not broken.

There are players who could excel in any era and guys who were great because of their era. Most of today's stars could excel in any era. As for the older regime, I strongly believe that Stockton and Malone could play in any era. They were both 2 way players who were specialists. Both were athletic, disciplined and strong. Hornacek would maybe be a poor man's Reddick or Korver. Maybe.
