Elfrid Payton is a candidate to win ROY, honestly. Carter-Williams esque type of player.
He is not a legit ROY candidate. I would be shocked if he won ROY.

He might not win it, but he IS a legit ROY candidate. Easily top #5.

Also I don't see him as top 5. He may reach top 5 for this season depending on which guys get how many minutes but long run I don't see him as a top 5 player in this draft. I would have taken Stauskus over Payton on draft night and I still would.
Never said he's top 5 in the long run. Just said he's a legit candidate THIS YEAR given that:
Kent Bazemore off the board for pennies. I know Atlanta is a better situation, but that kid is looking for the most money he can, and if you can argue that paying Gary Heywood $16 million a year for FOUR YEARS is fiscally responsible, then so would throwing an extra million to Bazemore for each of the next two seasons.
By the way, even in a market saturated with teams with cap space, the Lakers were still able to net a good NBA player WITH a 1st rounder and maybe more. The Celtics got a rookie-scale 7-footer and a 1st rounder. I can't recall the other instances off the top of my head, but an infinity of Steve Novak situations aren't on the horizon if you have space to rent.
