What's new

Future plan

OKC will dump Perkins before they let Durant, Westbrook, Harden or Ibaka go. If they have to they can amnesty Perkins. I don't see anyway they let Ibaka go.

Posts like these are the bane of my existence. So just because they are "way good" players means they wouldn't let them go? "I mean, why would you let Ibaka and Harden go?! HAHAHA, what an idiot!" But, by all means dont crunch the numbers.....

I will for you though, k?

-In 2013/14 season OKC has $33,736,281 committed with Perkins and no Ibaka, Harden or Westbrook (Hoops Hype hasn't taken into account Westbrooks new contract because it needs to know the new salary cap first, I believe).

-I'm going to guestimate Westbrook's first year on the new deal is roughly what Durant's was, which is $16,324,500, which leaves us at $41,583,344 with only 5 guys on the roster at this point.

-Lets say they get Harden to give them a sweetheart/"win one for the gipper" type of deal and he signs for roughly $12mil a year (welllll under market value), at that point we are at $53,583,344 with 6 guys on the roster and no Ibaka yet.

-Moving on; Lets say they also get a sweetheart deal from Ibaka at, say, $8.5 mil (again, these are so low they are laughable, but are illustrating a point that I'm sure will be missed) which gets us to $62,083,344 with 7 men on a 13 man roster.

-At this point it should probably be noted that the salary cap for this season is about $58mil, and its hovered around that for the last 3 seasons. But lets say for argument sake that its at $60mil (that would be the highest in history, I believe) in 2013/14

-Now, lets say they amnesty Perkins like you say they would (eliminating serious front court depth in the process), that leaves them at $53,605,907 with 6 guys under contract.

-They now have $6,394,093 to sign the required 7 players with (meaning each of the 7 will be paid $913,441.....or less).

That is in a scenario in which I gave them an unlikely $2mil extra in cap space and gave them EASILY $4mil off in sweetheart deals per season.

-So lets go the other way and say the cap is still $58mil and they have to sign Ibaka at $11mil and Harden at (still a deal) $14mil.

-That leaves them at $58,105,907 and still needing to sign 7 other players and they are already over the cap.

-Every player they signed would cost them double because they would be paying the $1 for $1 tax up to $5mil over the threshold then it would go to $1.5 per dollar after the first $5mil over. Realistically they would be at the $1.5 per dollar mark because they have 7 more players to sign.

So, outside of "oh my god, who would even NOT re-sign Ibaka and Harden?!?!" this is the real world where things like economics and salaries come into play.

Preach on, Brudha. Don't forget the extra $1 per increment for teams that violate LT in 4 out of 5 seasons. I have a post on here somewhere about why that is very likely under a Durant, Westbrook, Harden, Ibaka scenario.

I don't know if that would make the Jazz better or not and I really don't care. Pull the lever, KOC!

Isn't the next line: " Wrong Lever!" ?

I am afraid that it would be the wrong lever if the jazz trade away 2 overpaid mediocre talents with expiring contracts for any combination of overpaid mediocre talent with multiple years left on a bad contract.

I said I don't know and don't care, hence the wrong lever clip.

We're talking about trading one expiring for one expiring who makes $2.5 million less and a draft pick.

I really screwed this post up I know it is Alec burks and I meant marquise Teague not Jeff

Just to add if I recall in 2014 teams will start to pay more then 1 to 1 on the luxury tax. I think the jazz have a good shot at ibaka. Could you imagine favors and ibaka.

From what I understand it's 1 to 1 up to $5mil over the threshold, then, once you exceed 5 mil over its another .50 per dollar every 5mil (so its $2 for $1 spent at $10mil over etc).

Then, as Franklin so expertly mentioned, if you're a repeat offender (meaning you've paid tax 4 out of 5 seasons) you start at $2.5 per dollar and up. At least this is the way I've read it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think you are wrong but the point still is the cant afford 4 players making 10+ million. Jazz could steal ibaka.

Ibaka has a lower rebounding rate than Al Jefferson. Do we really want to sign a below average rebounder?

/sarcasm.

Man driving into the paint and looking up at Favors and Ibaka would be a bitch. Do it.

Ibaka's still a bit iffy for me. He's a STUD right now. But his game relies a lot on his leaping ability blocking shots, which could decline as he gets older (AK47 anyone?).

Also we'd be relying solely on Favors inside for any sort of points production. He's a game changer for sure (right now) but $10m? I'd have to think about that...

Ibaka can give you anywhere from 10-15 points per game and assuming Kanter improves his offensive game, I could see 10-12 points from him off the bench if he was given 25+ mins. Assuming Favors gives us 17-20 points, that's anywhere from 37-47 points just from the 4 and 5 spots. Not to mention, the defense each will provide.

Just don't like the idea of Ibaka taking away time from Kanter.. If Favors & Kanter are really our future, we shouldn't throw another $10m to another big.

Don't think Kanter will be ready to start after next year. Everyone wants bigs especially one's that are athletic, can rebound and block shots. If Kanter begins to play exceptionally well, we could always use Ibaka as trade bait. It really all depends on what the Jazz do with Jefferson and Millsap first

If Kanter has a good year next year and looks to be ready to start, I doubt we'd throw $10m to Ibaka just as a trade bait. Also don't think Ibaka would sign the offer if his starting position is shaky..

Ibaka has a worst rebound rate than Jefferson, who if you read the Jefferson Rebounding thread, is an average rebounder. That would make Ibaka a below average rebounder.

Not really disagreeing with the point of your post, but I think you are missing one thing. The luxury tax doesn't kick in until 70 million.

From what I understand it's 1 to 1 up to $5mil over the threshold, then, once you exceed 5 mil over its another .50 per dollar every 5mil (so its $2 for $1 spent at $10mil over etc).

It's 1 to 1 until 2013-14. Then it jumps to 1.5 as the first increment. In 2014 the repeater rate kicks in for teams who payed the tax in all 3 of the previous 3 seasons. After that, it's 3 out of 4.
