You are right. Anything can happen.
That being said, I'd rather capitalize on what value that pick has now (or near future/before the season in which the pick occurs in), because it probably has more value as a trade asset in the present than it does as an actual draft piece or trade asset in the future.
If it was our only asset, I might agree, but we can trade our next 2 picks protected and the OKC pick in any potential deal. That way we protect ourselves from trading away the #1 pick overall when the GS team plane plunges head first into the Wasatch front.
