Gordon Hayward -> the next Pete Maravich?

So let's summarize all the players that Hayward is being compared to by Jazzfanz since joining the Jazz:

Pistol Pete
Scottie Pippen
Larry Bird
Grant Hill (pre-injury)
Jeff Hornacek
Paul George

Wow that is some list...you gotta love the objectiveness of messages boards...

It is not given then Hayward will average more then 4 throughout the season. With Burke taking over more and more of offensive duties I see Hayward's assists dropping to 3.5-3.8 per game range. Which is still good as long as his turnovers will go down as well. His current AST/TO ratio at 1.5 is terrible for a man who has such a high usage rate.

If he is being compared to Pistol Pete, this is really sweet news for the Tank. When Pistol Pete played with Jazz in SLC they were absolutely horrible. Bring back Gentle Ben Poquette!!!

When his team actually have a game plan on the court his asist/to ratio will be fine like it did against the bulls (12 asist/1 to). He was not playing simple but playing spontaneously and that was causing him make lots of turnovers. Also he is getting a lot of attention and ball presure from opponents but if he can pass the ball at the right time for the open man he can take advantage of the situation and increase his assist numbers like he did against the Bulls. We need him to help out Burke as a second ball handler as much as possible.

This topic is blasphemy! I don't think many people realize just how incredible Maravich was. Just a magician. He averaged 44.2 ppg in college. Re-calculated for the 3 point shot (which came in later) it would have been 57 ppg. 57 point per game over 3 years. How many college players ever score that much in one game ever? And the ball handling skills? Way off the charts, way beyond what anyone else has ever done. I believe that he invented the behind the back pass, behind the back dribble, between the legs dribble and pass, no-look pass and more. Just saw a video with red auerbach where Pete demonstrates a crazy pass where his arms go one way and the ball goes 90 degrees the other way. Crazy stuff.

....you took the words right out of my mouth.....although Maravich did not invent those things you mentioned. (He may have "perfected" some of them, though!) Maravich's skill level and basketball IQ is so far superior to Hayward's that to compare the two is almost sacrilegious! Not that Hayward is a basketball "dummy".....but Maravich could play 25 games of "21" against four "hip hoppers" or "AND1" clowns....and would NEVER lose a game, true or false?

And I meant zero, zero disrespect for Hayward. Maravich was just on another planet. The most spectacular player ever.

I have called Hayblurb The next Dunleavy countless amounts of times.. Dating back to 2011.

They're completely different players, dude. It took Dunleavy 7 years (after 3 years of college) to average more than 3.0 APG (he hit 3.5)-- Hayward hit 3.1 in his sophomore season, and he's on track for 4-5 this season.

Hayward is much more of a Manu (career 15/4/4 player) than Dunleavy, if we're trying to find non-black Hayward comparisons. Hayward needs to keep working on his at-the-rim finishing, and his handle in order to get to Manu's level though. Keep in mind, Manu was 26 when he came into the NBA.

Haywad can't hit the three as consistently as Gino though. But I haven't really compared Leav to Gordan (refer to page 1-2 of this thread) in about a year. In reality, he's a player of his own. Some nights he's cookin , some nights, not so likely.
