What's new

Great move by KOC, whats next?

I'd re-sign Fess so we can go big like we used to with Malone and Ostertag. That's the size inside we need in the playoffs. Bring Millsap and Okur off the bench. Very solid front court.

This is a great trade?

Hey, can we give you a couple firsts for your albatross?

I am excited and approve of this deal but we did not steal AJ. From last seasons team, we traded Boozer, Ronnie Brewer and a #1 and a #2 in order to acquire him.

I don't know if steal is the right word, but we definitely bought low. I don't think you are evaluating the deal correctly. We decided to let Boozer go BEFORE any possibility of Al coming here came up, because we thought contract was too big/long for a 29 year old guy and we already have a great PF in Millsap. We traded Brewer because we could not afford him and had to shed salary LAST YEAR. So, you are simply not assessing the trade correctly. The trade is: Big Al for Memphis pick and our pick. Memphis pick may not even be actual selection as it is protected. But let's say 2 non-lottery picks for a 25 year young 20-10 center who can block shots. You think 2 non lottery picks is not buying 25 year old 20-10 center low? Come on now, let's get real here. Normally you would need a star caliber player to get a young center like that or a top 3 selection. We gave lowly 2 non-lottery picks for it. Aside from Gasol trade (which was the worst trade in NBA history, which I still can't rationalize), I can't even remember of anyone ever giving up 25 year old 20-10 center and not get a star player or top pick in return. 2 non-lottery picks is nothing for a guy of this caliber. Hell, to get Al in the first place, Wolves gave up KG!

This was a perfect example of buying low. And the reason we could buy low is because Al had injury 1.5 years ago and had a down (for him) season last year. Also because Minnesota got a steal themselves in Beasley from Miami (which had 2 hours to dump Beasley after James said he would sign and had bigger things to worry about than getting fair value back) and bolstered their front court. So, there is a reason Al's stock was low for a guy of his caliber, and there is a certain risk here. But that's the whole point of value investing, you assume a risk when it is manageable, and there is a big likelihood of reaping huge rewards. But don't think for a second that 2 non lottery picks is the intrinsic value for a 25 year old 20-10 center. We definitely bought low here, no doubt about it.

I don't know, if he got 21 and 11 a couple years ago before his injury, maybe he could get 24 and 11 with Deron.

Still, a frontcourt of AK, Millsap, Okur and AJ will be making about 45M this year and none of them can guard Gasol, Odom or Bynum.

Let's wait until we win a championship before we say this is a bigger steal than the Gasol trade.

I agree that none of them can guard Gasol or Bynum, but we finally have someone who can score against them. Boozer can do nothing in the post against the Lakers but if you watch Al's highlight, you will see how he can take Gasol and Bynum to the low post and score.

This is not a steal; this is using the available cap space - which is an asset. In this case, since Jazz were over cap limit, they obtained a friendly gesture from Bulls/Boozer to create this cap space (trade exception). And then one team wanted a player for about $14/year another team needed cap room (an asset) for its future plans.

this is not too far from signing a free agent in the transaction of things and if would have happend that way would it have been a 'steal.'?

If we retain Matthews, and our players can stay or get (Okur) healthy, maybe, just maybe, we could finally get the #2 seed and do some damage.

Yet I can't help but think Okur's return will be slow and he'll hit some major roadbumps along the way, one of either AK, Millsap or AJ will get hurt and miss 25 games, and we'll end up in the 4 seed with a second round match-up vs. you know who.

We need to keep Matthews in order to have some semblance of a perimeter defense. Next, I'd get Brewer back as an energy guy off the bench. He can play both SG and SF and runs the floor very well, and though not as sound defensively on a consistant basis as Matthews, does have his moments of brilliance due to his great quickness.
Harrington seems destined for Dallas, per ESPN. Nor really a SG, more a PF/SF...

I still wonder if we have talked to Raja Bell and his agent to see what kind of contract they want. Since Matthews is almost certainly gone and Bell might do a one two year contract for quite a bit less than Matthew's I think he should be a guy on our radar.
