OK, I usually just lurk and don't post, but I am amazed that jazzfanz members have not equated the absence of favors with the recent guard struggles.
The offense currently is very pick and roll heavy with Favors coming up top to usually set a screen for Hayward (and sometimes Burke). Burks, Burke, Jefferson, and Williams are all potential shooters that can spread the court to open up the middle. Favors sets very good screens and is also very good at rolling appropriately. This gives Hayward (or Burke when he leads the pick and roll) many options for passing/scoring. In my opinion, the Jazz offense is at it's best when this scheme is operating efficiently. It also, not so coincidentally, corresponds to games where Hayward and Burke have produced at a high level with few turnovers.
If you watch the screens over the last several games from Kanter and Gobert, they only make contact on the screen about 80-90% of the time before executing an inefficient slip (usually to the basket). This poor screen/ slip does not give the guards enough space to operate which has lead to the huge uptick in turnovers for Hayward and Burke and also the poorer shooting due to the absence of space for them to drive, pass, and score.
I predict that once Favors returns (assuming Marvin stays healthy) the turnovers will drop, the shooting percentages (particularly from 3) will go up and Burke and Hayward will go back to a high production level both in assists and points.
Everyone here will attribute it to Burke getting through the rookie wall and Hayward finding his shot, but in reality it will be because the jazz will have regained their floor spacing and have someone that can operate as a big in the pick and roll effectively, which will get the Jazz back to a system where the ball can not be double teamed/ nor driving lanes blocked on the pick and roll.
...Or I'm completely wrong and everyone just currently sucks, either way.
But, go back and watch the screens before you tell me that I'm wrong.
