Guarding the point guards

Very interesting comments from Earl and Harp. Harp said last night that a big reason that opposing pg are lighting us up is a problem was handling the pick and roll. Earl put it in different terms, below, but it may mean the same thing. Wonder why they do not adjust as he implies they should.

Also, this points back to the sh*tty defense played by Big Al and Sap. It seems like whatever they get on offense they give back on defense. And if they are not hitting shots, we are sunk. Please Ty, play the young bigs with the vets. The youngs seem to be much better defenders.

Earl: "After watching Lowry pour in a game-high 32 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 7-for-8 beyond the arc, Jazz reserve point guard Earl Watson said he’d had enough. From Russell Westbrook and Jeremy Lin to Chris Paul and Lowry, speedy and aggressive point guards have burned Utah all season. With high-caliber 1s shredding the Jazz’s defense and initiating havoc that either results in high-percentage layups for themselves or wide-open looks for teammates waiting along the perimeter, Watson said it’s time for Utah to make a stand.

"We have to start stopping point guards. We haven’t changed our coverage yet. Our coverage has been the same since day one," Watson said.

He added: "If the coverage don’t change, I have to change. … I have to put the referees in a tough position, to either call a foul or let it play. I have no choice. Because I can’t keep letting point guards score. … It’s ridiculous. It’s beyond ridiculous.
"

And is this not also a bit of mutiny?

he's right. calling it mutiny is a bit dramatic. I'll stick with calling it a "correct statement".

that says it all i guess, watch at 2:34 masterfull defense :D

I am ready to play the young guys and let them struggle offensively because their defense is what the Jazz need to stop the pick and roll. However, it might just be that our PGs suck too. The best alternative is to split young/old. Play Favors/AJ together and Millsap/Kanter together to see if this helps. I have watched Kanter on the pick and roll. I think he does a great job for the most part. He definitely keeps his guy in front of him.

First of all, the biggest issue with the defense is effort. This is show with a lack of rotations and helping your teammate. Secondly, leaving a hot shooter wide open is just plain dumb. Looks like Bell is right about the IQ of some players. Thirdly, our PGs defense is bad. Lastly, jazz players seemed to be playing selfishly when they struggle with defense. It is almost like an attitude "my guy got pass me can you get him while I just stand here and watch. Screw rotating to your teammate's guy why he covers your ***."

The other two things that made our defense look horrible were the Rocket's passing the ball quickly and having shooters who can make shots. I think these are two things the Jazz should try to do.

I also fall short of calling this mutiny, however i do call it "saying the coach is making a huge basic mistake" publicly. Will be interesting to see if Earl's PT changes. If not mutiny it is certainly harsh criticism.
