Guys Headed to the Idaho Stampede?

If it were me running the Jazz, I wouldn't want to fill my D league team with guys that are good players, but have no upside. I would still like to get young players that have the length and talent, but just need to develop skills.

I think it is time for the nba to stop screwing around with the dleague. make it an official minor league and expand the draft to 4 rounds.

I think the problem is finding 30 viable cities. In order for the D-League to be a true minor league system, there have to be 30 D-League franchises all with a 1-1 affiliation. The current model for most D-League teams is to have a separate ownership group, but to have an affiliation for personnel and coaching with an NBA team. Local ownership requires a sufficient fan base to support a team and make it profitable. IINM, there are now 18 teams, with only Fort Wayne affiliated with multiple NBA teams. So the league has to grow by another 12 cities. That's a lot!

Minor league baseball is highly subsidized with many many many unprofitable clubs. Guys in single A are on $10,000,000 sign on bonuses..

Agree, but baseball is a different model. There's a real need for MLB teams to have a minor league because virtually no one makes a direct leap into the majors. On the other hand, before the age limit was imposed, we saw several players jump from HS directly to the NBA. I'm frankly surprised no one has challenged the age limit rule. I don't see why an 18-yr old can't make the decision to either embark on a career immediately or go to college, like they can in the "real world." But I think that is where we are headed with the D-League. For the first time, a player with D-League experience was drafted in the 1st round (Hairston) and another was drafted later (T. Ante-whatchamacallhim). The D League is eventually going to be an alternative to going to college.

At least one of those Iowa State dudes will get picked up by a NBA team. I bet they both rip it up in the summer league.
