Hayward to Boston

I completely get it man. Your team will ultimately figure this out down the road. The defense will continue to be elite and I'm sure the team culture will remain intact. My biggest question for Jazz fans is regarding Rodney Hood. I know he was inconsistent this season but do you think he has the ability to be an efficient scorer on a higher volume of shots?

Great question. I'm gonna say yes but with no confidence at all in my answer. (Probably just being a homer tbh)

I think he is the for next season.

I think Hayward decided long ago to go to Boston. That sucks but fine OK.

In light of that belief I have a very hard time finding reasonable justification for his actions over the last 5 days. He jerked Utah, and Miami, around and cost them the chance to go after other coveted free agents. I can respect his decision but not the way he went about it.

I do not find the "winning" argument to be convincing. Utah was a 60 win team last season when healthy. He could win in Utah. I think he just didn't want to be in Utah. He should have not jerked the Jazz around.

I dont think he really jerked the team around. I think that so much **** happened with every all-star going West and the Lebron leaving Cavs rumor, it just ended up making too much sense to go to the East. I genuinely believe the "it was a tough decision" thing. I just dont believe he was torn on July 4th, but the day or two before that, sure.

There were reports of him wanting to leave and wanting to go to Boston last year. I didn't believe them. Maybe I should have. In hindsight we were screwed either way. Build this team up to contention only to be faced with the possibility of either trading your franchise player before even trying to compete or risk losing him for nothing after having tried and succeeded to some extent? We never even had the chance to make the right decision IMO, unless he told them he was leaving next year, which he obviously didn't, even though he probably knew he was leaving. He screwed us well and good. And he continued to do it well into this free agency. He waited just long enough for us to be left with no good options to replace him in FA. Just so he could publish his major masterpiece of crappy writing.

I will play along and operate under this same assumption for a minute. Using that logic do you believe that Hayward was still leaning toward Utah prior to draft night and the PG trade? If you subtract George and Butler from the West then Hayward looks pretty safe for an All-Star appearance in Utah next season. Giannis and Kevin Love are also competition. You also can't ignore the fact that the Celtics were hoping to trade for PG after signing Hayward. It just seams silly to think that Hayward based his entire decision on All-Star appearances.

I think a much safer and logical assumption is that there are a number of factors that pushed Hayward towards Boston. The opportunity to win with Brad Steven's definitely played a significant role.

Let's look at IT. Brad Stevens is a good coach but much of the credit for his newfound fame really lies with him playing in the east. Not only is IT not an All star in the west(see Lillard and CP3) but if he was on one of the Playoff teams(some non playoff teams too, NOLA) he wouldn't even be the best player on the team. Last year's Celtics squad would have won fewer than 50 games in the west. They would have been eliminated in the first round, and the west got even better this week.
Hayward ran away from a stacked west to a weak east. It should be great for his brand, good for him.

The beginning of my last post was rooted in sarcasm. I don't think the All-Star games played a role at all. As for winning I strongly believe that he views was the better option. The Kevin Durant decision completely changed the landscape of the league and made winning with the Jazz a near impossible task. The Celtics simply have more assets and flexibility to build going forward. As you mentioned it really boils down to Stevens though. Hayward would have probably reunited with Brad no matter what as long as he was joining a competitive team.

Ah, the AS and conference finals appearances are pretty much the ONLY reason he decided to move to your inferior team in a vastly inferior conference (also the bromance with Stevens maybe? Seems silly). I doubt that the fact the Celtics are developing a 3rd pick who plays the same position played any role in the decision. Or the fact that the Celtics have more potential to acquire players years down the line, when Hayward is in his 30s.

He wanted an easy path forward full of accolades. I hope he chokes on them.

Either way, Hayward won't be enough to put the Celtics over the hump. The smart thing would have been to trade IT and rebuild using the plethora of picks and young players BOS has. They'll probably still do that once they realize they aren't much farther along with Hayward than without.

Where I disagree with you is the fact that Stevens wasn't THE driving factor. You are right about the Celtics being a low seed in the West. For the past 2 season we were exactly 17-13 against the West which puts us at only an average of 46 wins each season. However, you can't neglect the fact that adding Hayward to our roster would make us a perennial 50+ win team in the West while still having young players like Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Our Brooklyn 18 and LA 2018 picks also provide us the potential to land two top 5 players in next years draft. There's also the ability to trade those assets for another Star player. We have many different options to consider while building for the future. I honestly believe Gordon would have picked Boston even if both teams were in the Western Conference. Brad Stevens clearly was the difference.

Jaylen Brown is athletic enough to play WITH Hayward. The long term plan for Boston is to have many different wing players that can play together on the court. Jaylen will most likely guard the opposing teams best wing player once he becomes a starter. Also, we can build with our plethora of picks while being competitive at the same time. Guys like Tatum and Jaylen will be able to develop within a winning culture.

No, he would have chosen the Heat. CP3 wants to actually attempt to win, that's why he chose the Rockets.
