What's new

He won't score 25 points in a game in this entire career.

i think my favorite part of this thread is hopper's mounting frustration and breaking from character after being logically embarrassed once again, but my second favorite part is the "puppy" rationale, like a delusional child who shouts out bizarre non sequitors in a packed movie theater, finding himself a machiavellian puppet master because everyone turns around to tell him to shut the **** up

edit: lol no, maybe it's hopper awkwardly dropping "solipsist" after reading the wikipedia article on philosophy yesterday

And yes, I've been here for more time than Deron has. It's possible someone said that hyperbolically but to act like there was a large swell of people who were seriously advocating that Deron would never, ever, score 25 points per game is counter to my memory and probably reality.

I don't recall Hopper claiming anyone was "seriously advocating" this about Williams.

Deron scored 25+ points for the first time on March 17, 2006. So the window for this statement logically has to fall somewhere between draft day 2005 and then.

Because no one would be talking about it before the draft? March-August 2006 seems like a much more likely timeframe.

Not too mention, the caution/criticism in the OP that posters are beign too quick to judge young talent seems to have been bypassed entirely.

I seem to recall that there posters who advocated for Felton and/or Jack, not to mention Paul, being better PG propects than Williams.

...With a possible exception or two, I can't tell ya who the Fess (insert Boozer, CJ, Memo, Deron, Hayward, whoever) haters are, but I know they're around. I don't take names.

I <3 Thabo.

I dunno, that might be good information to have someday. Maybe you knew that already, but I repeated it just in case...
He's very good looking and his accent is really cool.

So what you're saying is that while you remember the exact claim made you don't remember who said it, when, or in what context...

Now I remember some things being posted about Deron being fat and whatnot...

I remember someone saying Deron was phat. I think it might've been kiri. At any rate, I agreed.

I'm going to fall into the Hopper camp here (and, to a degree, One Brow) and claim that I recall people preferring Jarret Jack or Raymond Felton over Deron. Not that it matters, really; we turned out fine.

As to the more over-arching theme of the first post in this thread, I agree that the bulk of people are awfully negative with respect to "prospects" the Jazz get. Though, playing Devil's Advocate here, don't the bulk of prospects on most teams end up being busts?

A good example is the high schooler craze that occurred in the early part of the decade...how many high school players were drafted that ended up having a Darius Miles-type career vs. a Kevin Garnet/Kobe career?

The only posters I specifically recall who were "anti-Deron" were Tuff Tiger (he was to Jarrett Jack what Kicky was to Deron) and skorol, who changed his opinion. And of course, Coach. Other than that, there was criticism, but I don't recall anyone making a claim of "He won't score 25 in a game", but I wouldn't be shocked at all if someone made that prediction.

Don't ask me to name, names because I really don't pay that close attention; but this board was polluted with Deron v. CP3 threads during their entire rookie season. In each of these threads the vast majority of posts said The Jazz screwed up picking DW over Paul.

I wouldn't be shocked, either. And the fact that Hopper is singling out one statement out of several hundred thousand is irrelevant, really, and is causing us to miss his larger point which is this:

- It is stupid to pretend that any player has a ceiling, as none of us is able to predict the future
- Logically, it would also be insane for any poster on this board to make any qualitative statements about any basketball player; for whom among us can give absolute assurance that the projections we give will be completely accurate?
- It would only follow that as humans, we would would be fools to think anything about anyone or anything. After all, we could be wrong.
- Hopper is a troll. Then again, maybe I shouldn't pass judgment -- he COULD change, and I would look like a fool for having ever doubted him.
- No. He couldn't.
