I heard that Domain called Ammon Olsen, 6"4 QB Alta 5A Champions 2008, on his mission...maybe...maybe some truth to Heaps rumers?

When does this dude get back? '12 season? I wouldn't read anything into it because college teams are always looking for good depth. Maybe they really liked the Olsen guy previously and just couldn't offer him due to a lack of scholarships? Maybe BYU's backup QB/s are transferring/switching positions? Jason Munns in particular would be wise to go and find playing time elsewhere because he has NFL type talent.

Did this QB commit to BYU prior to leaving on his mission? If that's the case isn't it standard procedure for schools to reach out to their mission athletes just to make sure the bond stays strong?

Riley Nelson and Ben Olsen switched schools after missions. I would assume schools are very concerned about stuff like that happening.

There is actually a "Riley Nelson" rule now that does a pretty good job of preventing after mission transfers from happening, unless contact is made firstly by the player. Both Olson and Nelson were recruited while on their missions. Utah State went bat **** over the whole incident and the rule changed. I would gladly give Riley back to Utah State:

In Bylaw 13.1.1.3.2.1 of the NCAA handbook, it states: An institution shall not contact a student-athlete who has begun service on an official church mission without obtaining permission from the institution from which the student-athlete withdrew prior to beginning his or her mission if the student-athlete signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) and attended the institution (with which he or she signed the NLI) as a full-time student. ... If such a student-athlete has completed his or her official church mission and does not enroll full-time in a collegiate institution within one calendar year of completion of the mission, an institution may contact the student-athlete without obtaining permission from the first institution.

The reason it wouldn't be a violation in this scenario is because this kid signed with SUU, who obviously plays in a lower division of football.

Thanks for the heads up on that rule. I did not know that. I do find it interesting that BYU is reaching out to a kid that has committed to SUU. Sure seems strange for a school that should have a sure-fire All American under center for the next 2 to 3 years.

Maybe even more strange that a guy signs up for an account on a Jazz forum just to post this? I think the depth explanation would suffice. Even if nobody transfers, Nelson will be gone, and James Lark would be a Sr. next year so they would still be down to 2 qbs. It's hard to recruit Quarterbacks when they know Jake Heaps is going to start for the next 3 years. Maybe he is the best prospect they could find to ride the pine?

Exactly! Depth is a major concern here. BYU is a great draw for QBs but who is going to sign knowing they won't see the field for 2-3 seasons? Common sense here folks.
