What's new

Hey Poker Players, Let's Start A Poker League!

Not sure what you mean here. Are you talking about the money left from each game that doesn't get paid out? If so, if you have a strong box or safe in the house, that should work. If not, short of putting it in a bank, I got nothing.

Yeah, I guess it's not complicated.

I mean, I'd like to provide some assurance to people that the money is there and that I'm not going to run away with it. Now, a few hundred dollars isn't enough to motivate me to skip town, but I don't want people to have to worry about it either.

That said, the money will have to remain under my control because ultimately the amount collected will be paid out and it'll be up to me to pay it out. If it wasn't all there the difference would come out of my pocket. I'm not going to turn the money over to anyone else unless they are willing to accept the same responsibility.

I'd like to know what people think about the blind progression and length of the tournaments. They've been going longer than I intended, typically over 4 hours. I'd like to get them close to the 3-4 hour range. What I don't want is to get to a certain point in the tournament where even the large stacks are shoving all-in because the blinds are too high. I want the players and their cards to determine the action as much as possible. That said, I have a few solutions. One was to make the rounds last 30min but make big increases in the blinds every round. The other was to keep the same blind schedule I've been using but shorten the round duration as the tournament goes on. I like long rounds early because at full tables it takes 15-20 min for the button to make a full rotation. As the game moves on and there are less hands with 5 people in post flop shorter rounds aren't as bad. The goal is for everyone on a table to pay the big blind and small blind at least once before they go up again.

So here's what I want to try:

Typically the tournament will end when the BB and SB account for 5-10% of the total chips in play. With 20 players and stacks of 5000 there are 100,000 chips in play. The expected end time with the above structure would be around level 14-16, just over 3 hours.

I'm starting to look at the possible schedule. Tournaments during Jazz games, good or bad?

We used to double the blind every time someone went out. It works great to keep the blinds proportion to chip stack size early on, but it really screws thing when you get down to 5 or so. I'm a fan of slowing down blind raises later on so a final 4 actually has the opportunity to outplay each other rather than being a push fest. The action can go just as fast with players actually using strategy as it does with huge blinds.

Well, as some of you may already have been able to figure out, I can be a little dumb. If we play 1 tourney a month until Oct. that will be 9 games (I think franklin already figured that out). I'm fine with a 9 game season. I want to avoid Nov. because holiday plans and expenses might make getting people to the game hard. I plan to have a play-in game and then the final.

So, here is a preliminary schedule:

Feb. 17th*
Mar. 16th.
Apr. 13th*
May 18th
Jun. 15th
Jul. 13th
Aug. 17th
Sep. 14th
Oct. 12th

Play-in game TBD
Championship Tournament TBD

*Jazz play on these nights, but against N.O. and the Wiz.

These dates are not set. Let me know if there are any issues. I'd like to play the championship game the week after the final game. Might do the play-in the Sat. following the final regular game.

I'm planning on having a buy-in for the play-in game, probably $20. 2nd and 3rd in that game will win some cash. 1st place will get a seat in the final game and all players in the final game will win something. Some of the buy-ins to the play-in will go to the championship game.

I don't know if it's better to schedule the championship game now or wait until we're a little closer so that we can set it for a day that works for the people who will be playing.

I've got a 4 day weekend coming up. I plan to have everything figured out by this Sat. I will post an announcement/invitation thread then. Please get the word out to friends, family, etc. who might be interested.

So I'm pretty settled on a $20+$5 buy-in. I think a $20+$10 would discourage too many players who either aren't interested in the league aspect or don't have a shot at making the final table (towards the end of the season). I'm also planning to have 1 maybe 2 larger buy-in games. If a $50 buy-in game ($40+$10) for the last regular season game is too much speak now. The larger buy-in game will be worth more points. Here's how the breakdown would look:

1--15.81
2--10.54
3--7.91
4--6.32
5--5.27
6--4.52
7--3.95
8--3.51
9--3.16
10--2.87
11--2.64
12--2.43
13--2.26
14--2.11
15--1.98
16--1.86
17--1.76
18--1.66
19--1.58
20--1.51

I'm still debating if I want to include a rebuy/add-on game in the mix. The way it would work would be a $10 buy-in for 2000 chips, none goes towards championship game. For the first hour players can rebuy anytime their stack is 1000 or less and they will get 1000 chips. Rebuys will cost $10, $5 will go to the pot for that game and $5 will be withheld. Players can "double rebuy" if they lose all their chips, which will cost $20. After the first hour there will be an add-on for $10 that will get you 2000 chips. Again, $5 towards pot, $5 towards championship game.

Objections?

Questions about how a rebuy/add-on game works?
