Hmmmmmmmmmm...LOL

There are just so many ways of looking at this whole scenario. Its kind of crazy. There's gotta be like at least 20 from a Jazz fan's perspective alone - the Sloan-Dwill angle, the D-will Free Agent debate angle, the rebuilding angle, the Deron was a bad egg angle, the Jazz panicked angle, the "Wait for a franchise tag" angle, and so on - then not to mention from a New Jersey fan's angle, from the rest of the NBA, from the "Star power gone amuck in the NBA" perspective. There's just no way to come to any definitive conclusion on the whole thing. I'm up and down, back and forth on this whole thing myself.
 
Gotta give Sloanfeld props on his ability to post with his face shoved so deep in Carlos Boozer's crotch.

Dude can multitask.

For the record I am in the camp that NJ won this trade. To get arguably the best PG in the league for a mid-level PG and a project plus a few picks of dubious value is a coup no matter how you look at it.
That said, the writing was on the wall. I think it was apparent to the FO that Deron was not going to stick around past this contract. So they decided to get what they could. I think they got less than they should have but at least they got something and didn't just let him bolt for a trade exception or something lame like that.

I still think the FO sucks right now. Why didn't they work harder to put a team around D Will that could compete. They shipped out piece by piece a competetive team over the past 2-3 years, but didn't do anything to replace them. Big fail for the FO imo, but at least they made some move to get something for D Will.

So this is our team and I am ready to look to the future and see where we can go with this new group.

You answered your first exaggerated statement with your next paragraph. IF you look at it from the persective that DWill would not sign with Utah again, and you feel favors has all-star potential, then this is a GREAT trade.

YOur second exaggerated statement is that Utah did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to replace the players they let go is also not true. Al Jefferson was a legit attempt to replace the caliber of player that Boozer is. They are different players and the chance that a AJ/Sap/Dwill combo worked out better than with Boozer was a decent business risk. Picking up Raja was a good business risk - his carreer 3pt percentage puts him top 10 ALL TIME. He is a good defender. He is a bargain. Did it pan out - not as good as i expected, but it was a business risk and a reasonable one to replace Korver. Ronnie Brewere was ultra expendable (I liked a lot about his game...) However, one of our biggest weaknesses is our outside shooting. So, keep him or try another path. Again a reasonable strategy. I would NEVER, NEVER, EVER guessed that Mathews would have been offered as much as he was. I don't fault the Jazz for that miss - i'm sad they missed on that one, and i'm sure they are as well, but it was a miss. That happens in business. Nobody bats 1.000 in business decisions.

I am glad you are thrilled with the moves they have made. I am not. No they did not do anything to replace the parts they let leave or sent out. Korver became Hayward. Matthews became Bell. Bozzer became AJ (probably a push there...might be edge to AJ). For the most part they were all downgrades. You deserve a huge DUH because of COURSE they brought in other players, that is kind of the rule. But replacing means finding someone on par or better. They did not do that.

In the end they have done nothing to make this team more competitive than the team they let fall apart. Which was my assertion to begin with.

If you think they are more competitive more power to you. I do not.

But as I stated it is what it is. Time to look to the future, and see what this far less competitive team can become.

I like Harcher's post. It's all gambling. Some you win some you lose. I HATED draft night when they drafted Heyward. Other than one preseason game against L.A. my disgust has been justified. Do I want him to prove me wrong? YES! I'm a Jazz fan. I've been one for over 25 years. When they do something I think is dumb I PRAY I'm wrong. Defense mechanism? That's not the correct term. I live and die with this team so when they do dumb moves I die.

This move was fantastic. Everyone's always bitching about the Jazz sitting on their hands and not making moves ahead of the curve -- remember Boozer? I spent months and years on here posting my frustration that they didn't trade him when they could have gotten something for him. They needed to SELL HIGH on Boozer, but they didn't. Thanks to the earlier inexplicable Brewer trade netting them a crappy pick (which made me furious) they were able to get Al Jefferson to recoup the loss of Boozer. Phew! This time they didn't need to be lucky. They played their hand awesomely. They sold high - and that takes some major balls to do. Wow. Don't get all emotional. If you're a poker player that's afraid of loosing the pot you'll slowly bleed your chips away -- and Deron likely would've walked after his 3 year deal was up. So be ballsy and don't be afraid. I understand people still crying about this. It was a HUGE shock - coming from super-conservative Jazz FO. Especially after the precedent set with how they handled Boozer. It's so cool they're getting SMART!!

Sheesh, Sloanfeld! Ask Toronto if this was a good move. Ask Cleveland. Put the assets they picked up aside and look at the fact they had the balls to make this move and that alone makes me absolutely ecstatic! BE real. There was a good chance Deron would have walked and Jazz would have nothing. And it's very likely you and others would then be posting on here how the FO is so stupid for not selling high when they had a chance.

Selling high takes balls. This is awesome.

You may count me as being in this category.

I don't actually think they are closer to a championship right now. But I don't think this team is anywhere near or has ever been anywhere near a championship team. This trade increases the odds that we have a chance to be a championship team, IMO. We get worse in the short run, that to me is not even debatable. Why does that really matter though? We are not all that good right now anyway. But to me this gives a more potential future pieces to try and build a championship contender.

This team is going to struggle this year and probably misses the playoffs. Giving them 2 lottery picks in the coming draft. Hopefully they can get some players to make this team better.

Yeah, especially judging by how the last rebuilding exercise went you should have to be really optimistic about our chances of being an elite contenderby 2015

We rebuilt on the fly and had a good run. The player's simply were not quite good enough. This time they have a much better base of player's to start with. Last time they had pretty much nothing to begin the rebuild. This time they have a decent core of players and assets.
 
This trade was a no-brainer. Deron was leaving and he where he is at was not helping this team. He is definitely in the top 3 PG's in the league but Utah was not the spot. What we got in return is as good as it is going to get. I doubt Deron will stay in NJ
