Hollinger thinks the Okur extension is "genius"

@mambo - count it or don't, he was an all-star. either way, he's definitely a "fringe" star at worst, and if you look around at other free agent contracts signed by big men in that talent category, i think you'll find that memo was paid fairly.

@one brow - not so sure that it would be "ludicrously" easy because of his age and the way his performance tailed off last season even before the injury. i agree that other teams would surely listen to offers about a healthy memo making 10.5M, but i tink everybody knows that we've seen memo's peak at this point.

The main problems with Memo are:
(1) He's on the same roster with Deron, Boozer, AK and Millsap. If you ask me, AK is the one who isn't performing up to the level of his salary, so more of the problem lies there. If AK's salary were more appropriate for what he brings, the Jazz aren't in luxury tax land and Memo's deal doesn't stand out so much.
(2) He's not going to protect the basket, but then neither is Boozer. But consider this: if Memo did everything he already does AND played great interior defense, you'd have to pay him $15M, not $10M.
(3) He got hurt, which wasn't known at the time of the extension.

Well put. However, I was and am still against it because until the Jazz find someone to plug the mortal wound on D around the rim, having a dude like Okur is half-pointless. I also feel he was around more to offset the crappy shooting from our then-starting wings (Brewer, AK) where one is now gone (thank 'god') and one may well be. Okur is and was a band-aid solution with a swiss-cheese skillset, I still feel he's making off in the night by getting that contract.

And if the Jazz wouldn't have extended him and some chump team wants to throw $40 million over 3 years, I wouldn't have a tear to shed.
 
The Problem is AK47's contract.

Everyone on this board has talked waaaaaaayyyyyyy too much about getting rid of Boozer, Memo, Korver, CJ, etc over the past few months. Right now, we're concentrating too much on getting cap relief from Boozer's contract. We're going to miss his 20 and 10 a lot. If our #1 priority is getting out of LT hell, then we should unload AK47's unbelievable contract and his poor play/injury ability.

For the most part, those players (Deron, Booz, Memo) have played well for us and up to their contracts. AK47 has dropped the ball completely. We should keep the core of this team together but look to unload AK47's contract. If we can get a halfway decent player and a bag of chips in the next few years as a result of unloading AK's abortion contract I'll sing praises to KOC eternally.

Just think about it, if this team had a dependable player after Deron, Boozer, and Memo, we'd probably have a few championship rings by now. Even the Lakers as good as they are always need a 4th player, whether its Artest, Ariza, Fisher, or Shannon Brown. Unfortunately, after Deron, Boozer, and Memo no one has consistently stepped up. Perhaps Millsap could be that player, but he's too short to be very effective against the lakers. Nor can he play at the same time as Memo, Boozer, and Deron. We desperately need to unload AK47's contract....
 
For the record, the Jazz haven't had a consistent 3rd player worth any note since Hornacek. AK plays with his heart on his sleeve (not in a good way), and Memo is probably the worst road player in the league. And that's saying nothing of his crap D.

I'm not buying it. Everyone said his contract would be very hard to deal even when he was healthy.
Now, that's changed? I don't think so.
 
At the time of Okur's extension everyone was pissed at Boozer and not only wanted him gone but expected it too. Everyone was relieved we extended Memo until he decided to not show up for half of the season last year. Don't kid yourselves, hindsight is always 20/20.

I believe that Okur accepting a two year extention in which he will be 33 years old when the contract is over then go out and look for a longer contract which he would have gotten by at least one year, maybe two is the proof that he wanted to stay with the Jazz and also not tie them down with a long time contract.
