Tremendous Upside

True, but he learned a little something something about elite defense in Cleveland last season, playing next to Mobley and Allen. That coach was limited in his options, besides playing his #3 overall future superstar at the 4 , but he saw enough in Marky to play him at the 3 all season when noone else ever did it previously. I think the Cavs are probably feeling a little bit stupid right now, despite how good Spida has played without Garland available. If Marky had played this great in Cleveland they could have probably kept Agbaji and still got the Spida.
I think the Cavs were very happy with Lauri last season. There's a lot of mouths to feed in their starting lineup, with the strong investment in Garland and Mobley (and Allen being 100% dependent on others for his scoring opportunities), so having an efficient dude who didn't need the ball much there to compliment them was perfect. But there was no way he could've been doing the stuff he's doing now. Just not enough basketballs, particularly with Garland using a LOT of possessions.
I think the Cavs simply realized that Lauri was being wasted in a 3th/4th option role (and he's too good to play off the bench), and with their need to drastically improve the SG position, the decision to do the Mitchell trade was easy in the end. With Lauri, they lost some firepower, but replaced it with Don and a rotating cadre of dudes at the 3 to space the floor.
